AI Visibility Checker: See If AI Engines Mention Your Brand
Free tool by AEO GEO Labsby the AEO GEO Labs team4 min read
An AI visibility checker tells you whether AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can find, read and quote your site, and whether they actually mention your brand. Checking properly takes two steps: a readiness scan of your site, then a prompt test of real answers. Our free AI Visibility Grader does the first step for free.
For background, read what AI visibility is.
Step 1: Run the free AI visibility checker on your site
The first check answers one question: is anything on your site stopping AI engines from using it? Paste a URL into the AI Visibility Grader and it returns a score out of 100 across seven weighted parts:
| Part | Weight | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | 25 | robots.txt rules and live requests as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot |
| Readable without JavaScript | 15 | Whether content is in the raw HTML |
| Answer-ready content | 15 | Question headings, direct answers, facts, sources, bylines, dates |
| Structured data | 15 | JSON-LD for the page and company |
| On-page basics | 15 | Titles, descriptions, canonicals, indexing, headings |
| Brand entity | 10 | Wikidata and Wikipedia presence, schema links to them |
| llms.txt | 5 | Whether a plain-text site map for models exists |
Run it on your homepage and on your most important article or product page. The homepage shows access, schema and entity issues; the deeper page shows whether your content is easy to quote.
How to read your AI visibility check results
Read the result from the highest weight down, because an access failure makes the other scores irrelevant.
- Crawler access is low. Fix this first. OpenAI's crawler documentation states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A single robots.txt line or firewall rule can remove you from an engine.
- Access is fine, content scores low. Rewrite key sections so each one answers its heading in the first sentence or two, names your company instead of "we", and backs claims with specific facts.
- Everything scores well. Your site isn't the bottleneck. Recommendations now depend mostly on what other sites say about you, which Step 2 tests.
Step 2: Check whether AI engines actually mention your brand
The second check tests real answers. This manual method takes an hour or two:
- Write 10 buyer questions. Mix category, problem and comparison questions.
- Pick three engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (for AI Overviews or AI Mode) cover most audiences.
- Use clean sessions. Log out or use a temporary chat.
- Run each question three times per engine. AI answers vary between runs. SparkToro and Gumshoe found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same brand list twice, so one run tells you very little.
- Record three things. Was your brand mentioned? Was your site cited as a source? Which competitors appeared?
- Calculate your mention rate. Runs that mentioned you divided by total runs (90 here).
If competitors appear and you don't, the sources cited in those answers are your outreach targets. The tactics for changing the result are in AI brand visibility.
When to move from a manual check to a tool
Move to a paid tracking tool once you need more than about 30 prompts, more than three engines, weekly runs, or reports for other people. We compare them by what they track in the best AI visibility tools.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free AI visibility checker?
Yes. The AI Visibility Grader on this site is free, needs no sign-up, and scores any URL out of 100 for AI crawler access, JavaScript rendering, answer-ready content, structured data, on-page basics, brand entity and llms.txt. It checks readiness, not mentions. To check actual mentions for free, run 10 buyer questions three times each in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google and record the results.
Does a high AI visibility score mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
No. A high readiness score means AI engines can crawl, read and quote your pages. Whether they recommend you depends on how often and how favorably reviews, comparison articles, forums and directories describe you compared with competitors. A site can score 95 and still be absent from answers if the wider web rarely mentions the brand.
How often should I check my AI visibility?
Run the site readiness check after any major change to robots.txt, your CDN or firewall, your rendering setup or your templates. Run the manual mention check monthly with the same questions, so results are comparable over time. If you need weekly or daily data across many prompts and engines, a tracking tool is more practical than repeating the manual method.
What's the difference between an AI visibility checker and a tracking tool?
An AI visibility checker scans your site once for problems that stop AI engines from crawling, reading or quoting it. A tracking tool runs prompts through AI engines on a schedule and reports how often your brand is mentioned and cited. The checker finds technical blockers; the tracker measures results. Most teams need the checker first.
