How the llms.txt generator works, in four steps

You generate llms.txt by turning your key pages into a short, structured markdown file. With the tool, that takes four steps:

1. Open the llms.txt generator and choose the Generate tab.
2. Enter your domain. The tool reads the sitemaps listed in your robots.txt, or tries /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml. With no sitemap, it falls back to the links on your homepage.
3. Review the draft. It takes up to 200 URLs, ranks them by how shallow they are (/pricing before /blog/2023/some-post), fetches the title and meta description of the top 30, and groups pages into H2 sections by their first path segment. Legal and careers pages go under ## Optional.
4. Edit, download, and upload the file to your site root so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. In most frameworks that means the public or static folder.

Then run the Validate tab against your live domain to confirm the server returns plain text, not HTML.

What a good generated file looks like

A good llms.txt file follows the format published at llmstxt.org: an H1 with your site name (the only required part), a blockquote summary, optional notes, then H2 sections of links. The shape to aim for:

Every link line uses - [Title](URL): note. The note tells an agent whether the page is worth fetching, so make it specific.

How to read the validator results

The validator checks your live file line by line and pairs each problem with a fix. The common results:

Edit before you upload

A generated llms.txt is a draft. Sitemaps list everything; llms.txt should list what answers real questions. Three edits matter most:

• Cut hard. Twenty well-described pages beat 200 bare links.
• Rewrite the notes. Say what each page answers, in plain words.
• Fix the summary. One sentence: who you are, what you sell, who for.

Be honest about what it does

As of October 2026, no major AI search engine says it uses llms.txt to pick citations, and Google's AI features guidance says no AI text files are needed. Where do I upload the generated llms.txt file?

There's no public evidence that it does as of October 2026. No major AI search engine has confirmed using llms.txt as a citation signal, and Google says no special AI files are needed for its AI features. The file helps agents find your best pages quickly. Rankings and citations still come from crawlable, useful, well-cited content.

Should I also create llms-full.txt?

Only if you run documentation or an API. llms-full.txt is a convention, not part of the llmstxt.org spec: one file holding the full text of your key pages so a tool can load everything in one request. Docs sites benefit. Most marketing sites only need the short llms.txt index, and a huge full file is rarely read in full.

How often should I regenerate llms.txt?

Edit it whenever you add, remove or rename an important page, and review it at least once a quarter. Dead links make the file less useful to agents. Run the validator after each change: it requests a sample of the linked URLs and flags any that fail.
