AI Search Engine Optimization: The Practical Guide

by 6 min read

Short answerai search engine optimization

AI search engine optimization is the work of getting your brand named and your pages cited inside answers from AI search engines such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot. In practice it means four things: open crawl access, rank for the questions behind each prompt, write answers a model can quote, and earn mentions on sites the engines trust.

This page is the hands-on version. For the theory of how language models pick sources, start with the LLM SEO guide, which covers the same ground from the model's side. Here we focus on what to do on Monday morning.

How AI search engine optimization differs from classic SEO

AI search engines differ from classic search in one way that changes the job: they read pages for the user and return one written answer with a few citations. A results page shows ten options. An AI answer often shows three to six sources, and many users never click any of them.

That shifts what you optimize:

Classic search AI search
Win a position on a results page Win a mention or citation inside an answer
Title and meta description earn the click A quotable sentence earns the citation
One query, one results page One prompt, several background searches
Rank tracking per keyword Mention tracking per prompt, per engine

The table hides one constant. Most AI search engines retrieve pages from a search index before they write. As of October 2026, Google states in its AI features documentation that a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with "no additional requirements." Rankings still feed AI answers.

Step 1: Fix access before content

AI search optimization starts with access, because an engine cannot cite a page it cannot fetch. Check three things in this order.

  1. Robots.txt. Each engine runs its own crawler. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Google AI Overviews use normal Googlebot crawling.
  2. CDN and firewall rules. Bot protection at the CDN can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. Check the security settings, not just the file.
  3. Rendering. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your main text loads client-side, they may see an empty page. The free What AI Sees checker shows the raw HTML a non-rendering crawler gets.

This step takes an afternoon and fixes the most expensive failure: being invisible for a reason that has nothing to do with content.

Step 2: Map the questions behind the prompts

To optimize for AI search engines, map the questions your buyers ask, then find the smaller searches each question triggers. AI engines break one prompt into several background queries. Google calls this "query fan-out." A prompt like "which CRM works best for a small real estate team" might trigger searches on pricing, integrations, and reviews.

A practical mapping process:

  1. List 30 to 50 questions buyers ask before they choose a product like yours. Sales calls, support tickets and community threads are better sources than keyword tools here.
  2. For each question, write down the three to five sub-questions an engine would need to answer it.
  3. Check whether you have a page that answers each sub-question directly.
  4. Check whether that page ranks in Google and Bing for the sub-question.

Gaps in steps 3 and 4 are your content plan. Our explainer on how AI search engines choose their sources covers why the retrieval step matters this much.

Step 3: Rewrite key pages to be quotable

AI engines quote sentences, so the page that gets cited is the one with the clearest sentence. Pick your ten most commercially important pages and rewrite them with these rules:

  • Answer first. The first sentence under each heading answers that heading's question.
  • Define in full sentences. "X is a Y that does Z" is easy to lift. A bullet fragment is not.
  • Use tables for comparisons. Pricing tiers, feature sets, "X vs Y": put them in tables.
  • Source your numbers. Name the source in the sentence and link it.
  • Be specific. "Supports 40 integrations, including Salesforce and HubSpot" beats "integrates with popular tools."

The research supports this. The original GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found that adding quotations, statistics, and source citations raised a page's visibility in generated answers, while keyword stuffing did not help. Google's own guidance on helpful, people-first content points in the same direction.

Step 4: Build the outside evidence

AI search engines trust brands that independent sources describe consistently, so off-site work is part of AI search optimization. If your site is the only place that says what your product does, an engine has little reason to repeat it.

Where to focus:

  • Review and comparison sites in your category, with accurate, current descriptions.
  • Industry publications that cover your space, through contributed data or expert commentary.
  • Community discussions where buyers ask for recommendations, with honest participation rather than planted posts.
  • Consistent entity details (name, category, what you do) across profiles and directories.

This is slow work. It is also the part competitors cannot copy in a weekend.

A 30-day starting plan

A first month of AI search engine optimization fits into four weeks:

Week Work Output
1 Crawl access, CDN rules, rendering checks All AI search crawlers can fetch key pages
2 Prompt list and fan-out mapping 30 to 50 tracked prompts, a gap list
3 Rewrite top ten pages for quotability Answer-first pages with tables and sourced claims
4 Baseline measurement across engines Mention and citation rates per engine

Measure before and after, using the same prompts on the same engines. Run each prompt more than once, since AI answers vary between runs. Judge trends over a quarter, not a single week. AI search engine optimization and generative engine optimization overlap almost completely; the GEO guide covers the terminology if your team is debating labels.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search engine optimization?

AI search engine optimization is the practice of making your brand and pages appear in answers from AI search engines like ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot. It combines crawl access, ranking for the questions behind prompts, quotable writing, and third-party mentions. It overlaps heavily with generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization, which describe the same goal.

Do I need a separate strategy for each AI search engine?

Mostly no. Google AI Overviews and Gemini draw on Google's index, Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing, and ChatGPT search and Perplexity run their own crawlers alongside other sources. Ranking in Google and Bing, keeping crawlers open, and writing quotable pages covers most of the ground. Then check each engine for specific gaps, such as a blocked crawler.

Does schema markup help with AI search optimization?

Schema markup helps engines understand who you are and what a page is about, and it supports normal search features. As of October 2026, Google says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use structured data that accurately describes your organization, products and articles, but do not expect it to force citations.

How do I know if AI search optimization is working?

Track a fixed list of prompts across the engines you care about, on a regular schedule. Record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your pages are cited, and which competitors appear. Watch referral traffic from AI engines in analytics as a secondary signal. Look for a trend over a quarter rather than reacting to single answers, which vary.

If you would rather hand this to a team, AEO GEO Labs runs AI search optimization programs for B2B and SaaS companies, and our guide to AI search optimization services explains what that work should include. See our services.
