Here is what each option does well and where it falls short.
Google Search Console: the free baseline
Google Search Console is the only AI Overviews tracker with first-party data. Its Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Google says the report reached all sites worldwide on 31 August 2026, though a site needs enough AI impressions for data to appear.
The limits are real. It doesn't show which queries triggered the AI Overview, which competitors were cited, or whether AI Overviews or AI Mode drove the impression.
Best for: every site, as the source of truth for whether AI impressions are growing.
Semrush: AI Overviews inside rank tracking
Semrush tracks AI Overviews inside its Position Tracking tool. According to Semrush's knowledge base, you can filter tracked keywords by the AI Overview SERP feature to see which ones trigger an overview and where your domain is cited. Position Tracking records an AI Overview citation as a position 1 ranking, whatever your organic position is.
Semrush also sells a separate AI Visibility toolkit. Its AI visibility features page lists coverage of Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with share of voice and competitor benchmarking.
Best for: teams already using Semrush for rank tracking who want AI Overview data in the same reports.
Ahrefs: Brand Radar and a free preview
Ahrefs tracks AI Overviews through Brand Radar, its AI visibility product. Brand Radar measures how often a brand is mentioned and which pages are cited across a large set of search-backed prompts.
Ahrefs also offers a free AI Overviews tracker that needs no signup. As of October 2026, it shows a limited preview: mention counts, monthly trends, top topics, and the top cited domains and pages in your category. Ahrefs states that full daily tracking needs a Brand Radar subscription. The free tool covers Google AI Overviews only; Brand Radar adds ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
Best for: a quick, free look at your brand's AI Overview footprint, and for brand-level share of voice if you pay.
SE Ranking: daily tracking with cached results
SE Ranking offers a dedicated AI Overviews tracker. Its product page describes tracking AI Overview presence, your position among the cited links, the domains and URLs used as sources, and cached copies of the results page so you can see what changed. As of October 2026, it is sold as an "AI Search" add-on rather than included in base plans.

The free manual method
A manual AI Overviews tracker is a spreadsheet and a weekly habit. Pick 20 to 50 question-shaped queries, search each in a signed-out private window from the same location, and log whether an AI Overview showed, whether you were cited, and which domains were. Repeat on the same day each week.

How to choose an AI overviews tracker
Choose by the question you need answered, not by the feature list.
- "Are AI impressions growing at all?" Search Console answers this for free.
- "Which of my keywords show AI Overviews, and am I cited?" You need query-level tracking: Semrush, SE Ranking, or the manual method.
- "Who gets cited instead of us?" Pick a tool that logs every cited source, such as SE Ranking or Ahrefs Brand Radar.
- "How do we compare across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google?" Choose a tool with multi-engine coverage, and see our broader AI visibility tools comparison.
Our view: no third-party tracker sees what every user sees. Google's own guide warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Use trackers for trends, not for single-day verdicts.

Two tools can report different results for the same keyword on the same day. Judge any tracker on whether its week-over-week direction matches your Search Console data.
Do AI Overviews trackers also cover AI Mode?
Some do. As of October 2026, Semrush's AI Visibility toolkit and SE Ranking's AI tracking list Google AI Mode alongside AI Overviews. Search Console includes AI Mode in the same report as AI Overviews but doesn't separate them. Check each vendor's current documentation, as coverage changes often.
