How to Rank in ChatGPT: Getting Recommended in AI Answers

by 6 min read

Short answerhow to rank in chatgpt

How to rank in ChatGPT comes down to being findable by its search crawler, quotable when it reads your page, and mentioned by other sources it trusts. ChatGPT has no ranking list: it writes an answer and cites or names a few sources. You win by letting OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, answering buyer questions in plain sentences, and earning third-party mentions that repeat your positioning.

This guide is the ChatGPT-specific part of our LLM SEO guide. It covers how ChatGPT picks sources, then gives a seven-step plan.

How ChatGPT decides what to recommend

ChatGPT builds answers from two places: what the model learned in training, and what it finds by searching the web at answer time. The two behave differently, so they need different work.

Source What it is How you influence it How fast it changes
Training data Text the model learned before its cutoff Be widely and consistently described across the web Slow: only with new model versions
Live search Pages ChatGPT fetches for this question Be crawlable, indexed and the clearest answer on the page Fast: days to weeks

As of October 2026, ChatGPT searches the web for many questions about products, vendors, prices and recent events, then shows cited links. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," and that sites which block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still show as navigational links.

When ChatGPT answers from training data alone, it has no links to show. It names the brands that appeared most often and most consistently in what it read. That is why brand mentions on other sites matter even when nobody clicks them.

How to rank in ChatGPT in 7 steps

ChatGPT SEO is mostly classic SEO plus three extra habits: allow the right crawler, write for extraction, and build mentions off your own site. Here is the order we would work in.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot. Check robots.txt and your firewall or CDN bot settings. Blocking GPTBot (training) is a separate choice from blocking OAI-SearchBot (search). Many sites block both by accident through a "block AI bots" toggle. The AI crawler checker tests both, line by line.
  2. Serve real HTML. OpenAI's crawlers, like most AI crawlers, are not documented as running JavaScript. If your content only appears after scripts run, ChatGPT may see an empty page. Render important pages on the server.
  3. Get indexed beyond Google. ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawling. Bing has historically been one of them, and Bing Webmaster Tools is free. Our post on Bing and ChatGPT explains what is confirmed and what is not.
  4. Answer the buyer questions directly. Write pages that answer "best X for Y," "X vs Y," "X pricing" and "is X worth it" in the first sentence under a clear heading. ChatGPT quotes passages, so each answer should make sense on its own.
  5. Name yourself in the sentence. "Acme is an invoicing tool for agencies" survives being quoted. "We help teams get paid faster" does not, because "we" means nobody once it leaves your page.
  6. Add facts others cannot. The Generative Engine Optimization paper by Aggarwal and colleagues found that adding citations, quotations and statistics was among the most effective ways to raise visibility in generative engine answers, by up to 40% in their benchmark. Original numbers and clear sourcing give a model something worth citing.
  7. Earn mentions where ChatGPT looks. Review sites, comparison articles, industry publications, Reddit threads and directories all feed both training data and live search. One consistent description of what you do, repeated across those places, makes you easier to recommend.

SEO for ChatGPT: what not to do

SEO for ChatGPT does not reward tricks, and some popular ones carry real risk. Avoid these:

  • Hidden prompts or "AI-only" text. Text that tells AI models to recommend you is a manipulation attempt. It can backfire badly if spotted and does nothing a clear page would not.
  • Mass-produced comparison pages. Hundreds of thin "best X" pages invite spam actions in Google, which still feeds much of the web's discovery. Is ChatGPT bad for SEO? covers where that line sits.
  • Fake reviews and planted forum posts. They violate platform rules, get removed, and leave a trail that is worse than no mention.

Our view: there is no ChatGPT ranking factor list, and anyone selling one is guessing. What holds up is boring: be crawlable, be clear, be talked about.

How to measure your ChatGPT visibility

You measure ChatGPT visibility by asking it the questions your buyers ask and recording who gets named and cited. A simple manual method works for a start:

  1. Write 20 to 50 real buyer questions, from sales calls and support tickets, not keyword tools alone.
  2. Ask each in a fresh, logged-out or temporary chat so past conversations do not skew answers.
  3. Record whether you are named, your position in the answer, which competitors appear, and which URLs are cited.
  4. Repeat monthly. Answers vary between runs, so look at trends across many questions, not one result.

Track referral traffic too. Visits from ChatGPT often arrive with chatgpt.com as the referrer or a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter, though not every click is labeled. When manual checks get slow, the ChatGPT SEO tools roundup compares tools that automate them, and our guide to tracking AI brand mentions goes deeper on method.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?

Changes that affect ChatGPT's live search can show up within days to a few weeks, once the page is crawled and indexed by the sources ChatGPT uses. Changes to what the model "knows" from training take much longer, because they arrive only with new model versions. Most teams see the first movement on narrow, specific questions before broad category ones.

Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?

You cannot pay to change ChatGPT's organic answers. As of October 2026, OpenAI runs ads in ChatGPT for some users and has a crawler, OAI-AdsBot, that checks ad landing pages. Ads are labeled and separate from the answer itself. Organic recommendations still depend on what ChatGPT finds and what other sources say about you.

Does blocking GPTBot stop me ranking in ChatGPT?

Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, according to OpenAI's crawler documentation. GPTBot collects data for model training; OAI-SearchBot powers search results. Blocking GPTBot may reduce how well future models know your brand, though, so weigh that before blocking it.

Do I need an llms.txt file to rank in ChatGPT?

An llms.txt file is not required to rank in ChatGPT, and OpenAI has not said its search uses one as of October 2026. It is a cheap, optional file that some tools and agents read. Crawler access, clear pages and third-party mentions matter far more, so do those first.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor but not me?

ChatGPT usually recommends a competitor because it sees that brand described more often, more clearly or more recently in the sources it reads. Check whether your site is crawlable, whether your pages answer the exact question asked, and whether review sites and comparison articles mention you. The gap is usually off-site.
