AI Overviews Checker: See Which Queries Trigger AI Answers

Free tool by AEO GEO Labs

Short answerai overviews checker

An AI overviews checker tells you two things: which of your target queries show a Google AI Overview, and whether your site is cited in it. We have not built an automated checker yet, so this page teaches the free manual method: a fixed query list, a clean browser, a spreadsheet, and Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report.

It is one piece of the wider LLM SEO playbook. If you want software that does this daily, see our comparison of AI Overviews trackers.

Why there's no perfect AI overviews checker

No tool can see AI Overviews the way every user does. As of October 2026, they vary by location, device, language and session, and cited sources can shift between refreshes.

Google's own data is limited too. Its Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page, country and device, but not by query. The manual check fills that query gap with a small, honest sample.

How to check AI Overviews manually, step by step

Check AI Overviews manually with a fixed query list and a weekly routine.

  1. Build a list of 20 to 50 queries. Our Question Finder pulls question-shaped autocomplete suggestions for any topic. Favor longer questions: Pew Research Center found AI summaries on 53% of searches of ten words or more, against 8% of one- or two-word searches.
  2. Use a clean browser. Open a private window, stay signed out of Google, and note the country you're searching from. Use the same device type each time.
  3. Search each query once, expand the overview, and log the result in the sheet below, including every cited source.
  4. Repeat on the same weekday each week. Trends matter more than any single check.
  5. Cross-check with Search Console. Compare the pages that gained AI impressions with the queries where you saw yourself cited.

The spreadsheet columns to use

Use one row per query per check:

Column Example Why it matters
Date 2026-10-03 Lets you chart change over time
Query how long does SOC 2 take The exact wording you tested
AIO shown Yes Your trigger rate across the list
You cited No Your citation rate
Cited domains competitor.com, reddit.com Shows who wins and where to earn mentions
Your ranking page /blog/soc-2-timeline Which page should be competing

Two numbers come out of it. Trigger rate is queries with an AI Overview divided by queries checked. Citation rate is queries where you're cited divided by queries with an AI Overview.

How to read the results

Your results point to one of three problems, each with its own fix.

What you see Likely cause What to do
No AI Overview on most queries Short or commercial queries Add longer, question-shaped queries to the list
AI Overview shown, you're not cited, you rank top 10 Your page lacks a direct, quotable answer Rewrite the section with an answer-first paragraph
AI Overview shown, competitors and forums cited, you don't rank You don't cover the sub-questions Create or expand pages for the fan-out questions

The full fix list is in our guide on how to rank in Google AI Overviews.

A warning: one check is a sample, not a measurement. Look for changes that hold for three weeks or more.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI overviews checker?

Yes, in two forms. Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report is free and shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page, though not by query. The manual method on this page is also free. Some SEO suites offer limited free previews, but daily query-level tracking is generally paid.

Why do I see an AI Overview that my colleague doesn't?

As of October 2026, AI Overviews can differ by location, device, language, signed-in state and timing. That's why the manual method fixes the browser setup and repeats checks weekly. Compare trends over several weeks rather than arguing about one screenshot.

Does Search Console show which queries trigger AI Overviews?

No. As of October 2026, the Generative AI performance report shows impressions by page, country, device and date, but not by query, and it combines AI Overviews with AI Mode. To see which queries trigger an AI Overview, you need a manual check or a third-party tracker.

How many queries should I track?

Start with 20 to 50 queries that match real buying questions. That's enough to see a trigger rate and a citation rate without the weekly check becoming a chore. Add queries as you publish, and drop ones that show no AI Overview for a month.
