freeDomain Age Checker

How old is that domain, really?

Enter any domain. We read the registry's official RDAP record and show its exact age, when it expires, who the registrar is and what its status flags mean.

What you get

The registry's record, translated.

WHOIS output used to be free-form text that every registry formatted differently. RDAP replaced it with structured JSON, so we can read it reliably. We send your domain to the RDAP bootstrap service, which forwards the request to whichever registry runs that extension, and report what comes back.

  1. 1Exact age

Years, months and days since the registration event, plus the total in days.

  2. 2Key dates

Registration, expiry, the last change to the record, and when the registry last refreshed its data.

  3. 3Registrar

The company the domain is registered through, its IANA ID, website and abuse contact.

  4. 4Status flags

Every EPP status code, explained in plain English, with locks and warning states marked.

  5. 5Nameservers and DNSSEC

Where the domain's DNS is hosted, and whether the delegation is signed.

  6. 6Compare

Up to five domains side by side, handy for sizing up competitors or a domain you're buying.

Subdomains are reduced to the registrable domain first, so blog.example.co.uk is looked up as example.co.uk.

Why it matters

Age is a clue, not a ranking factor.

Search engines don't reward birthdays. What an old domain usually has is history: years of links, mentions and content. A new domain can outrank an old one with better pages; an old domain with a spammy past can drag on a fresh site.

Buying a domain? Check the registration date against its archive. If the record says 2008 but the content only starts last year, the domain probably expired and was re-registered, and its previous life may come with baggage. Our website history tool shows what was there before.

Running your own? Watch the expiry date and the locks. A domain without clientTransferProhibited is easier to hijack, and a lapsed renewal can take your site, email and every link to it offline at once. Turn on auto-renew and the registrar lock.

For AI search, longevity helps indirectly. Assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on sources that are widely cited and consistently described across the web, which takes time to build. Check how consistently your brand is described with the brand entity checker.
