How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews

by 3 min read

Short answerhow to get cited in google ai overviews

Google AI Overviews answer the query at the top of the page and link to a handful of sources. For many commercial and informational searches, that box is where the search ends. Being cited inside it has become a separate goal from ranking beneath it, and the two do not always go together.

How Overviews differ from the rest of the page

The Overview is generated from pages Google has indexed, but the selection logic is its own. Pages ranking in the top ten are frequently cited, yet pages ranking much lower are cited too when they answer a sub-question more precisely. Overviews are also compositional: a single answer may draw from five sources, each supplying one fact or step. The unit of competition is the quotable passage, not the whole page.

That changes what "optimizing" means. You are trying to be the best source for a specific sentence Google wants to write.

What cited pages tend to share

Reading hundreds of Overviews for buyer questions, the cited pages tend to:

  • Answer within the first 100 words. The direct answer sits at the top, with the explanation following, not the reverse.
  • Match the query's shape. A "how to" query cites pages with numbered steps. A "best" query cites lists with clear criteria. A "what is" query cites definition-first pages.
  • Use headings that are questions or near-questions. The passage under a heading like "How long does setup take?" is easy to lift.
  • Carry structured data. FAQPage, HowTo where appropriate, Product, and Organization schema help Google interpret the passage's role.
  • Agree with the consensus. Overviews avoid outlier claims. If your page states a fact that contradicts most of the web, it is less likely to be used for that fact.
  • Be reachable without JavaScript. Googlebot renders JavaScript, but rendering is delayed and not guaranteed for every page. Core facts in the initial HTML are safer.

Steps to take on an existing page

  1. Find the sub-questions. Search the main query, read the Overview, and list each fact it states. Each is a passage you could supply.
  2. Add a direct-answer block. Two to four sentences at the top that answer the query exactly, with the number, the comparison, or the step.
  3. Restructure headings into questions. Keep them natural, not keyword-stuffed.
  4. Add FAQ schema for the questions you actually answer on the page.
  5. Date the page and keep it current. Commercial Overviews are sensitive to stale pricing and discontinued features.
  6. Check the rest of the web. If a directory lists your old pricing, the Overview may cite the directory over you. Fix the source.

A caution about volume

Publishing fifty pages to chase fifty Overviews usually fails. The cited page is typically the one that answers best, not the one that exists. One rewritten page that answers the real question tends to outperform a cluster of thin ones, and it is far easier to keep accurate.

How we work on it

AEO GEO Labs treats AI Overviews as one engine among several, measured on the same buyer questions as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. The weekly report shows whether you were cited in the Overview, which passage was used, and which competitor supplied the passages you did not. The work then targets passages, not keywords: write the sentence Google wants, put it where the model looks, and mark it up so its role is clear.

Start with one query

Search your most valuable buyer question. Read the Overview sentence by sentence and note who supplied each one. If none are yours, you now know exactly which passages to write. For the same analysis across your whole category, AEO GEO Labs will walk you through it live.
