What Are Google AI Overviews? A Plain-English Explainer
by the AEO GEO Labs team6 min read
What is AI Overviews? Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results. They answer the query in a few paragraphs or bullets and show links to the web pages the summary drew from. They are built on Google's normal search index and ranking systems, so the pages they cite are pages Google already crawls, indexes and trusts enough to show.
AI Overviews are one of several AI answer surfaces covered in our guide to LLM SEO. This post explains what they are, how they pick sources, how they differ from AI Mode, and what they change for a site that depends on search traffic.
What is AI Overviews, in one paragraph?
AI Overviews is Google's feature that generates a short answer above the regular results for queries where Google thinks a summary helps. Google describes them as a way to help people "get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly," with links as "a jumping off point" to read more, in its documentation on AI features for site owners. Google announced at I/O on 14 May 2024 that AI Overviews would roll out to everyone in the U.S., with more countries to follow.
At Alphabet's June 2026 investor presentation, Google said AI Overviews "now have over 2.5 billion users each month."
How do Google's AI Overviews work?
Google's AI Overviews work by running searches, picking relevant passages from indexed pages, and having a Gemini model write a summary grounded in those passages. As of October 2026, Google's documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode use a "query fan-out" technique: "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build the answer. That is why an overview for one query can cite a page that does not rank for that exact query. It ranked for one of the related sub-searches.
Three consequences follow:
- Only indexed pages can be cited. Google states a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." If your page is blocked, noindexed or set to
nosnippet, it cannot appear as a supporting link. - There is no separate AI index to submit to. Google says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."
- Passages matter more than pages. The summary is built from specific sentences. A page with one clear, self-contained answer to a sub-question can be cited even if the rest of the page covers something broader.
Not every query triggers one, and which ones do changes over time, so check your own keywords. The AI Overviews checker guide shows a manual method.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode vs featured snippets
AI Overviews, AI Mode and featured snippets are three different Google features that all answer the query on the results page. The table compares them as of October 2026.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | Featured snippets | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Top of the normal results page | A separate tab and conversational interface | Top of the normal results page |
| Who writes the text | A Gemini model, summarizing several sources | A Gemini model, with longer reasoning and follow-ups | Your page, quoted directly |
| Number of sources | Usually several links | Often many links across a longer answer | One page |
| Triggered by | Queries where Google thinks a summary helps | The user choosing AI Mode | Queries with a clear, short answer on one page |
| How to appear | Be indexed and snippet-eligible, answer sub-questions clearly | Same as AI Overviews | Be indexed, give a concise direct answer |
Google says AI Mode serves queries that need "further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons." The same Alphabet presentation said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users a year after launch. Featured snippets are older: they quote one page word for word instead of writing a new answer.
What do AI Overviews mean for website traffic?
AI Overviews usually reduce clicks to regular results for the queries that trigger them, because the reader gets an answer before scrolling. The best independent evidence so far comes from Pew Research Center's July 2025 study of 900 U.S. adults' real browsing. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when none appeared. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself on only 1% of visits.
That does not mean every site loses. Being cited still puts your link and brand in the most visible spot on the page. Measurement is the hard part: Google reports AI feature traffic inside the normal "Web" search type in Search Console, with no separate AI Overviews filter as of October 2026.
Our view: treat AI Overviews as a second ranking you can win or lose on the same query. Losing the click on a definition query is mostly out of your hands. Losing the citation to a competitor is not.
How do you get cited in AI Overviews?
You get cited in AI Overviews by doing the SEO basics well and writing passages that answer specific sub-questions in plain, quotable sentences. Google's own guide to optimizing for generative AI search says its AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems," and that special formats such as llms.txt or content chunking are not required.
In practice: keep the page crawlable, indexable and snippet-eligible; answer the main question in the first sentence under a clear heading; give each likely follow-up question its own short section, because fan-out searches look for those; and add something others lack, such as original data or a firsthand method.

Frequently asked questions
What is Google AI Overviews in simple terms?
Google AI Overviews is a feature that writes a short AI answer at the top of some search results, using information from web pages Google has indexed. It shows links to those pages beside or inside the answer. It replaced the earlier Search Labs experiment called Search Generative Experience and, as of October 2026, Google says it reaches over 2.5 billion users a month.
Can I turn off AI Overviews for my website?
You cannot remove your site from AI Overviews without also limiting how it appears in normal search. Google says the controls are the usual ones: robots.txt, noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet. A nosnippet tag stops your text being used in AI Overviews, but it also removes your normal search snippet, which usually costs more traffic than it saves.
Are AI Overviews accurate?
AI Overviews are usually reliable on well-covered topics but can make mistakes, especially on unusual questions with few good sources. During the 2024 rollout, widely shared examples showed overviews repeating jokes and satire as fact. Google shows the source links so readers can check. For anything important, such as health, money or legal questions, treat the overview as a starting point and read the cited pages.
Do AI Overviews use structured data?
AI Overviews do not require structured data. As of October 2026, Google's guidance says structured data "isn't required for generative AI search," though it still helps pages qualify for rich results. Structured data that accurately describes your page, author and organization is still worth adding because it helps Google understand the page, which supports every search feature at once.
How do I know if my page appears in AI Overviews?
You find out by searching your target queries and checking the links in each overview, because Google Search Console does not separate AI Overviews data from regular web results. Search from a clean browser or incognito window, note who is cited, and repeat on a schedule. Paid tracking tools automate this across hundreds of keywords if manual checks become too slow.
