How Perplexity Picks Its Sources (and How to Become One)
by the AEO GEO Labs team3 min read
Perplexity shows its sources on every answer, numbered and linked, which makes it the most transparent answer engine to study. For buyer questions, the same kinds of pages get cited again and again. If you know the pattern, you know what to build.
How Perplexity works, in outline
Perplexity runs a live web search for nearly every query, selects a set of pages, reads them, and composes an answer with inline citations. The models underneath vary, but the retrieval step is the part you can influence. It is a search engine with an editor on top: the pages it finds are the only pages it can quote, and among those, it favors the ones that answer the question most directly.
What cited pages have in common
They are specific to the question. Perplexity rarely cites a homepage for a commercial question. It cites the comparison page, the pricing page, the "X for Y" page, or the review-site category page.
They state facts plainly. Numbers, dates, named integrations, limits. Pages that describe rather than persuade are quoted; pages built from adjectives are skipped.
They are recent or clearly maintained. Dated updates, current pricing, and this-year references appear to matter, especially for anything involving cost or availability.
They come from a recurring set of domains per category. Over a month of answers in one B2B category, you will usually see the same handful of sources: one or two review platforms, a subreddit, a publication list, a few vendor comparison pages, and sometimes YouTube transcripts. That set is your target list.
They load fast and render without JavaScript. Perplexity's crawler is not patient. Content that appears only after client-side rendering is often absent from its view.
The two ways in
Be a cited source yourself. Write the page that answers the question better than the pages currently cited. For most categories that means a direct comparison page ("A vs B vs C for [buyer type]") with a verdict, criteria, and a table. Perplexity likes tables. It can quote a row.
Be present on the sources it already cites. If it cites G2's category page, get listed with current information. If it cites a subreddit, be part of that community honestly and answer questions there. If it cites a publication's "best of" list, pitch the publication with real differentiation. This is slower and compounds; a presence on a cited source gets you named across hundreds of questions, not one.
What does not work
Thin pages created to match query variations, keyword-heavy headings with no substance, and attempts to "optimize" for the model with prompt-like text hidden on the page. Perplexity reads the same web everyone else does and rewards the same thing: the page a careful human would have cited.
Checking the crawler
Perplexity publishes its user agent. Check your robots.txt for a rule blocking it, which often arrives by accident when a site adds a blanket block for AI training bots. Blocking the training crawler and the search crawler are different decisions with different consequences; blocking the latter removes you from answers entirely.
How we work with it
AEO GEO Labs logs every Perplexity citation for a client's buyer questions over 30 days, which produces two lists: the pages Perplexity wants to quote, and the domains it keeps returning to. The first list becomes a writing plan; the second becomes an outreach plan. Then the same questions run weekly, and share of answer on Perplexity is tracked against the work shipped.
Start today
Ask Perplexity your top buyer question. Open every cited source. Ask yourself which you could be on by next month, and which page you could write that is simply better than what it cited. For the full category view, with every engine and a few hundred questions, AEO GEO Labs will show you live.
