How Claude Cites Sources (and What That Means for Your Pages)

by 3 min read

Short answerhow claude cites sources

Claude is different from the other answer engines in one way that matters for visibility work: it does not search by default. A lot of answers come straight from training data, with no citation at all. Citations appear when Claude decides the question needs fresh information, or when the person asking turns web search on. That split changes what you should optimize for.

Two modes, two different problems

When Claude answers from memory, there is nothing to cite. Your company is either part of what the model learned about your category or it is not. This is the slow lane: it moves with each model release and it rewards years of consistent, factual coverage across the sites that end up in training data.

When Claude searches, it fetches a handful of pages, reads them, and writes an answer with inline citations pointing to the pages it actually used. This is the fast lane. A page you publish this month can be cited next month. In our testing, the pages that get cited tend to share a few traits, and they are not the traits most marketing pages have.

What tends to get cited

Claude tends to cite pages that state the answer early and plainly. A page that opens with "X costs $49 per month for up to five users" is far more useful to a model than a page that opens with a hero image and a tagline. The model is pulling a fact to support a sentence it is writing. Pages that make the fact easy to extract win.

It also tends to cite pages that are specific about scope. "Best for teams under 50 people in regulated industries" gives the model a reason to pick you for one question and skip you for another. Vague positioning gives it no reason either way.

And it tends to cite pages it can actually read. Content that only renders through JavaScript, pages blocked to AI crawlers, and pages hidden behind a login are invisible to the search step. You can check the first two in a few minutes with a crawler checker and a JavaScript visibility checker.

How the citation looks to the reader

Claude's citations are usually small inline markers or a short source list under the answer. People do click them, but the bigger effect is the sentence the citation supports. If the sentence says "Acme is a good fit for small accounting firms," that is the message, whether or not anyone clicks through. This is why we treat the wording on the cited page as the real asset. The model tends to paraphrase closely, so the sentence you publish is roughly the sentence that ends up in the answer.

What does not help

Keyword stuffing does nothing here. The model is reading for meaning, not matching strings. Long introductions hurt, because the fact is buried. Marketing superlatives hurt, because the model has no way to verify "leading" or "best in class" and tends to skip them in favor of a concrete claim from a competitor's page.

Paying for placement is not a thing in this channel. There is no ad unit inside a Claude citation. The only way in is to be the clearest available source for the question.

A simple test

Pick ten questions a real buyer in your category would ask. Run each in Claude with web search on. Record which domains get cited and which sentences they support. Then open each cited page and look at the paragraph that was used. You will usually find a plain declarative sentence near the top. Compare it with your own page on the same topic and the gap is normally obvious.

At AEO GEO Labs we run this as part of every AI visibility audit, across Claude and the other major engines, and the output is a short list of pages to rewrite so they can be quoted. The rewrite is rarely dramatic. Move the answer up, state the numbers, name the use case, cut the preamble.

Start with one page

Take your most important page, the one you would want cited for your core question, and rewrite its first two paragraphs so a model could lift the answer directly. Then rerun the question in Claude with search on and see whether the citation moves. If you want a baseline before you change anything, AEO GEO Labs offers a free answer-ready checker that scores a page on exactly these traits.
