Microsoft Copilot Runs on Bing: What That Means for AI Visibility

by 3 min read

Short answermicrosoft copilot runs on bing

Most companies have not looked at their Bing presence in years. Then Microsoft put Copilot into Windows, Edge, Office, and the Bing homepage, and all of those surfaces answer questions by searching Bing first. If you want to show up in Copilot, you are back to caring about an index you probably forgot existed.

How Copilot builds an answer

Copilot tends to run one or more Bing searches behind the scenes, read the top results, and write a response with numbered citations pointing back to those pages. The citations are visible and clickable. In our testing, the cited pages are almost always pages that rank well in Bing for a closely related query. If Bing does not rank you, Copilot has no reason to find you.

This is the same pattern as Gemini and Google, just with a different index. The difference is that Bing's index is smaller, updated on its own schedule, and weights signals a bit differently. Pages that Google ranks on page one are sometimes nowhere in Bing, and vice versa.

Why Bing is often neglected

Bing has a fraction of Google's search share, so SEO teams rarely budget for it. But Copilot is not a small channel. It is the default assistant on every new Windows machine and inside the Office apps that a large share of business buyers use all day. A question typed into the Windows taskbar is a Bing query wearing a different outfit.

The neglect is also fixable fast. Many Bing issues are basic: the site was never submitted to Bing Webmaster Tools, the sitemap is missing, or a crawl setting blocks Bingbot. These are hours of work, not months.

Checks that take an afternoon

Start with Bing Webmaster Tools. Verify the site, submit the sitemap, and look at the index coverage report. Pages you expect to rank that are not indexed are the first fix.

Then confirm the crawler can read you. Bingbot and the Microsoft AI crawlers need to be allowed in robots.txt, and the content needs to be present in the HTML rather than loaded later by JavaScript. A crawler checker will tell you in a minute whether you are blocking anything by accident.

Then search your core category in Bing itself. Note who ranks. Then ask Copilot the same question and note who is cited. The overlap is usually high, and the gaps tell you where to work.

Bing's own preferences

Bing has historically been a little more responsive to on-page signals than Google: clear titles, descriptive headings, and explicit keywords in the first paragraph tend to help more than they do in Google. It also tends to reward older, established domains and clean site structure. None of this is exotic. It is the on-page work that an on-page SEO checker flags, done properly.

Bing also indexes Reddit, LinkedIn, and a range of review sites readily, and Copilot tends to cite those for "is X any good" and "X vs Y" questions. If your category is discussed on those platforms, the discussion is part of your Copilot presence whether or not you participate.

The same page, quoted differently

Copilot tends to summarize cited pages in a sentence or two and attribute the summary with a number. The wording tends to track the page's own wording closely. A page that states "pricing starts at $20 per user per month" will produce a Copilot sentence with that number. A page that says "flexible pricing for every team" produces nothing usable, and the model tends to pull the number from a competitor or a third-party review instead.

At AEO GEO Labs we treat Copilot as its own line in the weekly report, because its citation set drifts from the other engines and because Bing indexing issues are so common and so cheap to fix. More than once, the single biggest gain in a quarter came from simply getting a site properly indexed in Bing.

Do the basics first

Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, confirm the crawlers are allowed, and rewrite the first paragraph of your key pages so a number or a concrete claim appears early. Then ask Copilot your top ten buyer questions and record who gets cited. If you want help setting up that baseline across every engine, AEO GEO Labs starts every engagement with that measurement.
