GEO vs SEO: What Changes and What Stays the Same
by the AEO GEO Labs team6 min read
GEO vs SEO comes down to one difference: SEO earns a ranking on a results page, while generative engine optimization (GEO) earns a citation or mention inside an AI-written answer. Both reward crawlable, trustworthy, well-structured pages. GEO adds a second test: can an AI model extract your sentences, trust them, and attribute them to you? Most of the work carries over. The goal and the scoreboard change.
This post compares the two on goals, signals, measurement and effort, building on the definitions in our generative engine optimization guide.
GEO vs SEO at a glance
SEO and GEO share a foundation but optimize for different outputs. The table below is the short version.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position in a list of links | A mention or citation inside one answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot |
| Unit of competition | The whole page | The passage, fact or recommendation |
| Typical query | Short, keyword-like | Longer, conversational, often with follow-ups |
| Main measurement | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, AI referrals |
| Volatility | Rankings shift over days and weeks | Answers can change between two runs of the same prompt |
What stays the same in SEO and GEO
Everything that makes a page findable and trustworthy stays the same, because AI engines retrieve from search indexes. As of October 2026, Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, and that from Google's perspective optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Microsoft Copilot grounds its answers in Bing. ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own crawlers but still need to fetch and index your pages.
So these carry over unchanged:
- Crawlability and indexation. A page the engine never indexed can never be cited.
- Helpful, original content. Google names unique, non-commodity content as the strongest long-term factor for its AI features.
- Site quality and page experience. Fast, clean pages that separate main content from clutter.
- Authority. Links and mentions from respected sites still signal trust.
- Structured data. It helps engines understand entities, though Google says no special AI schema exists.
What changes: ranking factors vs citation factors
What changes is the extra filter between "retrieved" and "cited". A page can rank well, get pulled into the AI's candidate set, and still not be quoted. The factors that decide that second step overlap with ranking factors but are not identical.
| Classic ranking factor | Citation factor that GEO adds |
|---|---|
| Keyword relevance to the query | Passage-level answer: one sentence that fully answers the sub-question |
| Backlinks to the page | Brand mentions across sources the engine trusts, linked or not |
| Content depth and coverage | Specific, checkable facts: numbers, dates, named sources |
| Title tags and meta descriptions | Definitions written as standalone sentences containing the term |
| Internal linking | Consistent entity facts across your site, profiles and directories |
| Page speed and Core Web Vitals | Content present in the raw HTML, not only after JavaScript runs |
| Google and Bing crawler access | Access for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot too |
The research behind GEO supports the evidence column directly. The 2023 GEO paper from Princeton and IIT Delhi researchers found that adding quotations, statistics and citations to a page raised its visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing made things worse than doing nothing. That is the clearest single sign that the rules diverge: a classic SEO habit hurt, and a journalism habit helped.
The crawler question
The crawler question is where many sites slip. Blocking "AI bots" in robots.txt can block search features, not just model training. OpenAI, for example, documents OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) separately from GPTBot (training). If you blocked both in 2023, you may be invisible in ChatGPT search today. Our free AI crawler checker shows which AI agents your robots.txt allows.
SEO vs GEO: how measurement differs
SEO measurement starts from a rank; GEO measurement starts from a prompt. In SEO you track a keyword's position and its clicks in Search Console. In GEO you track a set of buyer questions, run them across engines, and record whether you were mentioned, cited and described correctly.
The tooling has started to converge. As of October 2026, Google Search Console has a Generative AI performance report showing impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing citations in Copilot. Neither tells you about ChatGPT or Perplexity, so prompt tracking still fills the gap.
| Question | SEO answer | GEO answer |
|---|---|---|
| Are we visible? | Average position, impressions | Mention rate across a prompt set |
| Are we winning? | Rank vs competitors | Share of voice vs competitors |
| Is it paying off? | Organic clicks and conversions | AI referral sessions, branded search lift, pipeline |
How effort differs
GEO effort shifts weight from on-page tweaks toward evidence and reputation. A rough way to think about it:
- Technical work is mostly shared. Add AI crawler access and JavaScript rendering checks to your normal audit.
- Content work changes shape. Fewer keyword variations, more direct answers, original data and sourced claims.
- Off-site work grows. Being named in comparisons, reviews, forums and publications matters more when an engine assembles a recommendation from many sources.
Our view: if your SEO is weak, fix SEO first. GEO on top of an unindexed or untrusted site is decoration. If your SEO is solid, GEO is mostly the next 20% of effort applied in a new direction.
Where AEO fits
Answer engine optimization (AEO) sits between the two: it focuses on direct answers, such as featured snippets, voice answers and the answer blocks AI engines lift. Many people use AEO and GEO interchangeably. For the narrower comparison, read AEO vs SEO, and for one framework that combines all three, see GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO better than SEO?
Neither is better; they answer different questions. SEO gets your pages ranked on Google and Bing, and GEO gets your brand cited inside AI answers. Because AI engines retrieve from search indexes, GEO depends on SEO working first. A company with strong SEO and no GEO is missing AI answers; a company with GEO and weak SEO usually has nothing for the engines to retrieve.
Does good SEO automatically mean good GEO?
Good SEO gets you most of the way, but not all of it. Strong rankings put your page in the candidate set AI engines read. Whether the engine then quotes you depends on extractable answers, specific evidence, consistent brand facts and third-party mentions. Pages that rank first sometimes go uncited when a competitor states the answer more clearly.
Can I do SEO and GEO at the same time?
Yes, and most teams should run them as one program. The technical audit, content calendar and link building all serve both. Add three things for GEO: AI crawler access checks, direct-answer formatting on key pages, and a monthly prompt-tracking routine across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
What are the main differences between SEO and GEO metrics?
SEO metrics center on rankings, impressions and organic clicks for keywords. GEO metrics center on prompts: mention rate, citation rate, share of voice against competitors, sentiment of how you are described, and referral sessions from AI engines. As of October 2026, Google and Bing both offer first-party AI reports, but ChatGPT and Perplexity still require prompt tracking.
Does keyword research still matter for GEO?
Keyword research still matters, but its role changes. It tells you which topics and pages deserve attention. For GEO you add question research: the longer, conversational prompts buyers type into AI engines. Writing many near-duplicate pages for every variation is wasted effort, and Google warns that doing it to manipulate AI answers can breach its scaled content abuse policy.
