Entity SEO: How Search and AI Engines Understand Who You Are
by the AEO GEO Labs team5 min read
Entity SEO is the practice of making search engines and AI models recognize your brand, people and products as distinct, well-described things, not just strings of text. It works through consistent naming, a clear one-sentence description, Organization schema with sameAs links, and profiles on sources like Wikidata and LinkedIn that all say the same thing.
tl;dr
- 1An entity is a uniquely identifiable thing: a company, person, product or concept.
- 2Search engines store entities in knowledge graphs; AI models learn them from everything written about you.
- 3The goal is one consistent story about who you are, repeated everywhere machines look.
- 4Brand mentions on other sites matter, and they don't need to be links.
Entity SEO is the identity layer of semantic SEO: semantic SEO makes your pages understandable, entity SEO makes your brand understandable.
What an entity is in SEO
An entity in SEO is a single, well-defined thing that a search engine can identify regardless of how it's named. "Apple" the company and "apple" the fruit share a word but are different entities. Google built its Knowledge Graph around this idea in 2012, describing it as a move to "things, not strings."
Entities have attributes (founding date, headquarters, CEO) and relationships (founded by, makes, competes with). When a search engine is confident about your entity, it can show a knowledge panel, answer questions about you directly, and connect your pages to the right topics.
How AI engines understand your brand entity
AI engines understand your brand from two places: what the model learned in training, and what it retrieves from the web when it answers. Both depend on how consistently you are described across many sources.
If your homepage calls you "a revenue platform," LinkedIn says "sales analytics," and a directory lists "CRM software," a model has three competing descriptions to average. If every source says the same sentence, it has one.
Third-party mentions carry weight too. Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with visibility in Google AI Overviews (0.664), well ahead of backlinks (0.218). Correlation isn't proof, but it fits the idea that AI engines learn who you are from what others write.
Knowledge graph SEO: where your entity lives
Knowledge graph SEO means getting your entity into the structured databases that search engines and AI models draw on. The main ones:
| Source | What it is | How to get in |
|---|---|---|
| Google Knowledge Graph | Google's entity database, behind knowledge panels | Indirectly: consistent data, schema, notable coverage |
| Wikidata | Open, editable knowledge base used widely by search and AI | Create an item if you meet its notability policy, with sources |
| Wikipedia | Encyclopedia with strict notability rules | Only with independent, significant coverage; don't write your own |
| LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2 and industry directories | Profiles that models and search engines read | Claim and complete them, using the same description |
You can see how Google currently classifies a name using the Knowledge Graph Search API, which returns matching entities and their types.
The entity sentence: one description everywhere
An entity sentence is a single, plain sentence that states who you are and what you do, written once and repeated word for word across your site and profiles. A good one follows a simple pattern: name, domain, category, audience.
Example: "Ledgerly (ledgerly.com) is a payroll software company for remote teams."
Why word for word? Because consistency is the signal. A model that reads the same sentence on your homepage, about page, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and author bios has little room to guess. Put it in your Organization schema's description too, so the structured and visible versions match. This site does exactly that on every pillar page.
Entity SEO in seven steps
Building a brand entity is mostly about removing inconsistency. Seven steps:
- Write your entity sentence. Name, domain, category, audience. Get it approved once.
- Publish an About page that states it, names founders and leaders, and links to official profiles.
- Add Organization schema to the homepage or about page, with
name, url, logo, descriptionandsameAslisting every official profile. Google's Organization markup guide says this helps it "disambiguate your organization in search results." - Align every profile. LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, social bios and directories should use the same name and sentence.
- Create a Wikidata item if you qualify. It needs independent sources; it's a reference database, not a listing site.
- Mark up people. Give authors and leaders bio pages with Person markup and their own
sameAslinks. - Earn mentions. Coverage in industry publications, podcasts and community discussions gives engines independent descriptions of you.
To check where you stand, the brand entity checker looks up your Wikidata item and Wikipedia article, checks they point at your domain, and generates Organization markup with the sameAs links filled in.
Entities beyond your brand
Entity SEO also applies to topics. Pages that name the entities a subject involves, and link to your other pages about them, show engines how your content fits together. That network of covered entities is a large part of topical authority.
Frequently asked questions
What is a brand entity?
A brand entity is your company as search engines and AI models understand it: a distinct thing with a name, a category, attributes like founding date and location, and relationships to people, products and competitors. A strong brand entity is described the same way across your site, structured data and third-party profiles, so machines don't confuse you with anyone else.
How do I get a Google knowledge panel?
You can't apply for one directly. Google shows knowledge panels when it is confident about an entity. Improve your chances with consistent naming, Organization schema with sameAs links, complete profiles on major sites, and independent coverage. Once a panel appears, you can claim it through Google's verification process to suggest edits.
Does Wikidata help with SEO?
Wikidata can help search engines and AI models identify your brand, because it is an open, structured source many systems read. It isn't a ranking factor in itself. Only create an item if your organization meets Wikidata's notability policy, and cite independent sources. Then link to it from your Organization schema's sameAs property.
What is the difference between entity SEO and semantic SEO?
Semantic SEO optimizes content for meaning: covering topics, questions and related concepts so engines understand what pages are about. Entity SEO is the part focused on identity: making sure engines know exactly who your brand, people and products are. Semantic SEO makes pages understandable; entity SEO makes the brand behind them recognizable.
Do brand mentions without links help entity SEO?
They appear to. Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated more strongly with Google AI Overview visibility than backlinks did. That is a correlation, not proof of cause. Still, unlinked mentions give search engines and AI models independent descriptions of your brand, which is the raw material of an entity.
