AEO vs GEO: Same Goal, Different Engines

by 6 min read

Short answeraeo vs geo

AEO vs GEO is a difference of engine, not goal. Answer engine optimization (AEO) structures pages so a system can extract a direct answer, such as a featured snippet or voice reply. Generative engine optimization (GEO) works to get your brand cited or recommended inside AI-written answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Both aim to make you the answer.

This post builds on our answer engine optimization guide and explains where the two overlap, where they split, and how to plan for both without doing the same work twice.

AEO vs GEO at a glance

AEO and GEO share most on-page habits but differ in how the answer is produced and what influences it. Here is the short version.

AEO GEO
Full name Answer engine optimization Generative engine optimization
Engine type Extracts an existing passage Writes a new answer from several sources
Typical surfaces Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
What gets shown Your words, often verbatim A synthesis that may cite or name you
Main levers Answer-first structure, question headings, FAQs Quotable facts, entity clarity, mentions on sites AI engines read
Off-site work Minor Significant: reviews, press, community threads, listings
Measurement Snippet and PAA ownership per query Mention and citation rate across a prompt set

Answer engine vs generative engine

The core difference between an answer engine and a generative engine is extraction versus synthesis. An answer engine finds the best passage and shows it. Google's featured snippet is the classic example. According to Google's featured snippets documentation, its systems decide automatically when a page makes a good snippet, then show that page's text first. Your sentence is the product.

A generative engine writes a new answer. It may run several searches, read multiple pages, and blend them into a paragraph that cites some of the sources and names some brands. Your sentence is raw material. Whether you appear depends on whether your page was retrieved, whether it contained something worth using, and whether the model attributed it to you.

The line blurs in practice. Google AI Overviews are generative, but they draw on the same index and snippet eligibility as classic Search. ChatGPT search is generative, but as of October 2026 OpenAI's crawler documentation says it depends on OAI-SearchBot access to show sites in search answers, which makes plain retrieval a prerequisite.

Where AEO and GEO overlap

AEO and GEO overlap on everything that makes a page easy to retrieve, understand, and quote. If you do these well, both kinds of engine benefit.

  • Direct answers at the top. A 40 to 70 word answer under each question serves snippets and gives AI models a clean sentence to cite.
  • Question-led headings. Headings that mirror real questions help both extraction and retrieval for sub-questions.
  • Self-contained sentences. Definitions that name the term ("GEO is...") survive being quoted out of context.
  • Tables and numbered steps. Structured formats extract cleanly in snippets and summarize cleanly in AI answers.
  • Crawl access and indexing. Neither engine can use a page it cannot fetch.

Where AEO and GEO split

AEO and GEO split on two things: how much the answer depends on sources other than your site, and what kind of content gets used.

GEO depends more on what others say about you

When someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best payroll tool for a 20-person company", the answer is built from many pages: reviews, comparison articles, forum threads, and vendor sites. Your own page is one input. A featured snippet, by contrast, quotes one page. So GEO puts real weight on off-site presence: being listed, reviewed, and discussed on the sites AI engines read.

GEO rewards specific, sourced claims

The GEO paper by Aggarwal and colleagues (KDD 2024) tested content changes on a benchmark of queries and reported that methods such as adding statistics, quotations, and citations could raise visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. That is a research benchmark, not a guarantee, but it supports a sensible rule: give the model something specific and attributable to use.

AEO rewards precise formatting for one query

AEO is more query-by-query. You pick a question, find the format the results page already shows (paragraph, list, or table), and write the best version of that format. It is narrower, faster, and easier to measure.

Our view: plan AEO page by page and GEO brand by brand. AEO asks "is this page the best answer to this question?" GEO asks "when AI engines talk about our category, do they know who we are?"

How to plan for both

The efficient plan is to do the shared on-page work once, then add GEO's off-site layer. A simple order of operations:

  1. Fix access: make sure search crawlers can reach and index your key pages.
  2. Restructure key pages: add answer blocks, question headings, FAQs, and tables to the pages that matter for revenue.
  3. Make facts consistent: align your name, description, pricing model, and category across your site, profiles, and listings.
  4. Earn third-party mentions: get covered in reviews, comparisons, and community discussions in your category.
  5. Measure both: track snippet ownership for target queries, and mention rate across a fixed set of AI prompts.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO just a new name for AEO?

GEO is not just a new name for AEO, though the two overlap heavily. AEO targets engines that extract a passage, such as featured snippets and voice answers. GEO targets engines that write a new answer from many sources, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. GEO therefore puts more weight on off-site mentions and specific, citable facts, while AEO focuses on formatting the best answer on your own page.

Which matters more, AEO or GEO?

Neither matters more in general; it depends on where your buyers ask questions. If your traffic comes from question-style Google searches, AEO gives faster, measurable wins. If buyers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for recommendations in your category, GEO matters more, because those answers name brands. Most businesses need both, and the shared on-page work covers a large part of each.

Does Google AI Overviews count as AEO or GEO?

Google AI Overviews sit in both camps. They are generative, because they write a summary from several pages, which makes them a GEO target. They also rely on Google's normal index and snippet eligibility, so classic AEO habits like answer-first structure apply directly. As of October 2026, Google states there are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond standard Search eligibility.

Can one page be optimized for both AEO and GEO?

Yes, one page can be optimized for both AEO and GEO. Open with a direct 40 to 70 word answer, use question-led headings, include specific facts with named sources, and add a short FAQ. That serves snippet extraction and gives generative engines quotable material. The difference is what happens off the page: GEO also needs third-party mentions, which no single page can provide.

How do you measure AEO vs GEO results?

Measure AEO by tracking target queries and recording whether you own the featured snippet or People Also Ask answers. Measure GEO by running a fixed set of prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, then recording whether your brand is mentioned or cited and how competitors compare. Keep the prompt set fixed so month-to-month changes mean something.
