How to Write Comparison Pages That AI Engines Actually Quote

by 3 min read

Short answerhow to write comparison pages that ai engines actually quote

When a buyer asks an AI engine to compare options, the pages it cites are overwhelmingly comparison pages: "A vs B," "best X for Y," "X alternatives." Not homepages, not feature tours. If your site has no honest comparison page, you have handed that question to whoever wrote one, usually a competitor or a review site.

What a quotable comparison page contains

Reading the comparison pages engines cite most, the pattern is consistent:

A verdict near the top. Two to four sentences that say who each option is best for. Engines want to quote a conclusion, not assemble one from twelve paragraphs.

Explicit criteria. Price, team size, integrations, limits, support, compliance. Named criteria let a model answer "which is cheaper" or "which works with Salesforce" from one page.

A table. Rows are criteria, columns are products, cells are facts. A model can quote a row directly. Tables also force you to be specific, which is why many vendors avoid them.

Honest trade-offs. The page that admits where a competitor is stronger gets quoted; the page that wins every row gets treated as marketing. This is the single hardest instruction for a marketing team to accept and the one that matters most.

Dates and sources. A visible "updated" date and references for prices and limits. Commercial answers are recency-sensitive and engines avoid stale comparisons.

FAQ at the bottom. The five questions buyers ask when comparing these specific options, each answered in a short paragraph, with FAQPage schema.

The pages to write first

Not every comparison deserves a page. Start with three:

  1. The head-to-head buyers already search. Your brand versus the competitor you most often lose to.
  2. The category shortlist. "Best [category] for [your core buyer type]," with you honestly placed among real alternatives.
  3. The alternatives page. "[Dominant competitor] alternatives," which captures buyers who are leaving the leader and is a question engines answer constantly.

Each page should exist once, be maintained, and be linked from your main navigation or a visible "Compare" section. Hidden pages get crawled late and trusted less.

Mistakes that get a page skipped

  • Winning every row. If the table shows you ahead on all twelve criteria, a model discounts the whole page.
  • Vague cells. "Robust reporting" versus "Scheduled reports, CSV and PDF export, 90-day history." Only the second is quotable.
  • No verdict. Pages that present everything and conclude nothing are not cited for the verdict, which is what commercial questions want.
  • Stale facts about competitors. A wrong competitor price is a trust signal against you and a legal risk. Source and date every claim.
  • Content behind JavaScript. Comparison tables built as interactive widgets that render client-side are invisible to several crawlers. Ship the table as HTML.

A note on tone

Write the page as the most knowledgeable, least defensive person at your company would explain the choice to a friend. That voice is what gets quoted. It is also, not coincidentally, what converts the buyer who clicks through.

How we build them

AEO GEO Labs starts every comparison page from the current answers: what engines say now, which criteria they mention, which sources they cite. The outline is built from that, the draft is written in the client's voice, every number is sourced and checked line by line, schema is added, and the page is published straight to the CMS. Then it is watched: the weekly report shows whether engines began citing it for the questions it was built to answer.

Write one this month

Pick the competitor you lose to most. Build the table before you write a word, and make yourself fill every cell with a fact. If you want the page drafted from what engines currently say, with every number checked, AEO GEO Labs writes them as part of its core service.
