Is ChatGPT Search Replacing Google? What the Data Says

by 6 min read

Short answeris chatgpt replacing google

Is ChatGPT replacing Google? Not as of October 2026. Google still handles roughly nine in ten searches worldwide, and its own AI features are growing fast. What is changing is how people use both: ChatGPT now sits alongside Google for research and recommendations, and AI summaries on Google mean fewer clicks reach websites. The real shift is from links to answers.

That distinction, rankings versus answers, is the core of our framework for GEO, AEO and SEO. Below are the numbers behind the verdict, each linked to its source, and what they mean for a company that depends on search traffic.

Is ChatGPT replacing Google? The numbers side by side

ChatGPT is not replacing Google by share of searches, but it has become a second front door for research. This table puts the most reliable public figures side by side.

Measure Figure Source and date
Google share of worldwide search engine use 89.94% Statcounter, September 2026
Bing share of worldwide search engine use 5.29% Statcounter, September 2026
ChatGPT weekly active users 900 million OpenAI, reported by TechCrunch, February 2026
Google AI Mode monthly users Over 1 billion Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings remarks, July 2026
U.S. adults who have used ChatGPT 44% Pew Research Center, survey February 2026
U.S. adults who use chatbots to search for information 42% Pew Research Center, survey February 2026

Two caveats. Statcounter measures search engines, so it does not count ChatGPT as a search engine at all. And user counts are not query counts: a weekly user might ask ChatGPT one question and Google fifty. No public dataset gives a clean, like-for-like share of all queries across both.

Why ChatGPT is not replacing Google yet

ChatGPT is not replacing Google yet because Google kept its search share while adding AI answers of its own, and because many tasks still suit a search engine better than a chatbot.

Three points from the data:

  • Google's share has barely moved. Statcounter still put Google just under 90% of worldwide search engine use in September 2026.
  • Google brought AI answers to its own users. In its Q2 2026 earnings remarks, Alphabet said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users since its global expansion. Many people now get AI answers without leaving Google.
  • AI use adds to search rather than replacing it. Similarweb's 2026 generative AI report put visits to AI platforms at 9.5 billion a month, up 70% year on year. That is fast growth, but it sits alongside search habits, not in place of them.

Navigational, local and transactional searches also still favor a search engine. People looking for a login page, a nearby pharmacy's opening hours or a specific product page usually want a link, not a paragraph.

Where ChatGPT is taking ground from Google

ChatGPT is taking ground on research-heavy and recommendation questions, the kind where a buyer wants options compared rather than ten links to read. These are often the most commercially valuable questions a business can appear in.

Pew's February 2026 survey found that about four in ten U.S. adults use chatbots to search for information, and about a quarter use chatbots daily. Among chatbots, ChatGPT is the most used by a wide margin in Pew's data.

The competition among AI assistants is also shifting. Similarweb's report, dated July 2026, found that ChatGPT's share of worldwide generative AI web traffic fell from about 76% to about 53% between June 2025 and May 2026, while Gemini's rose from under 9% to around 27 to 28%. ChatGPT's visit count stayed roughly flat. In other words, the race is not only ChatGPT against Google. It is also Google's Gemini against ChatGPT inside the AI category.

The bigger change: fewer clicks, more answers

The bigger change is not which company wins the query but whether the searcher clicks at all. AI summaries answer more questions on the page, so fewer visits reach websites.

The clearest independent evidence comes from Pew Research Center's 2025 browsing study. It tracked 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and found that users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% for users who did not. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary.

Google disputes the scale of the impact and says organic clicks have been relatively stable overall, while third-party studies report sharp drops for some query types. Both can be true at once: total clicks can hold steady while clicks on informational queries fall. For a business, the safe reading is that being the source quoted in an answer now matters alongside ranking. Our guide to how AI search engines choose sources explains what drives that selection.

What this means for your search strategy

The practical takeaway is to keep investing in Google SEO while adding work aimed at AI answers on both Google and ChatGPT. You don't have to choose between them, because both draw on the same web.

  1. Keep SEO as the foundation. AI engines, including ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews, build answers from indexed pages.
  2. Let AI search crawlers in. Check that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and other crawlers you want citing you.
  3. Write pages that answer first. Direct answers, definitions and comparison tables are easier for engines to quote.
  4. Track AI answers, not just rankings. Run your buyers' questions through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews regularly and record who gets named.
  5. Watch AI referral traffic. Add AI assistants as a segment in analytics so you can see visits and conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Will ChatGPT replace Google search completely?

Probably not in the near term. As of October 2026, Google holds about 90% of worldwide search engine use according to Statcounter, and it has added its own AI answers through AI Overviews and AI Mode. ChatGPT is growing as a research and recommendation tool, but navigational, local and shopping searches still favor search engines. A split, with both used for different jobs, is the likelier outcome.

How many people use ChatGPT instead of Google?

No public dataset measures how many people use ChatGPT instead of Google, because most people use both. What is known: Pew Research Center's February 2026 survey found 44% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT and 42% use chatbots to search for information. Statcounter still shows Google at about 90% of search engine use, which suggests ChatGPT mostly adds to search habits.

Is Google losing search traffic to AI?

Google's own search share is stable, but websites are losing some clicks from Google to AI summaries. Pew's 2025 study found users clicked traditional results in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. So the traffic loss falls mainly on publishers and businesses that relied on informational clicks, not on Google itself.

Should businesses optimize for ChatGPT or Google?

Both, using largely the same work. ChatGPT search and Google's AI features build answers from crawled web pages, so strong SEO helps with each. Then add steps aimed at AI answers: allow AI crawlers, write answer-first pages with clear facts, earn mentions on sites engines cite, and track how often each engine names your brand for buyer questions.

Does ChatGPT use Google search results?

OpenAI does not publish a full list of its search providers, so this is unclear. What is documented is that ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to surface websites, and OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. Because the source of each search result is not fully disclosed, optimize for crawlability and quotable content rather than for one provider.
