Share of Answer: The Metric That Replaces Rankings

by 3 min read

Short answershare of answer

Share of answer is the percentage of relevant buyer questions for which an AI engine names or cites your brand. It is the AI-era successor to rank tracking, and it answers the question ranks cannot: when a buyer asks an assistant who to use, how often is the answer you?

Why rankings stopped being enough

A ranking describes a list. An answer engine does not return a list; it returns a verdict with a few names in it. You can rank first for a keyword and be absent from the verdict, because the model drew on a review site, a forum thread, and a competitor's comparison page instead of your result. Traffic reports hide this too, because a buyer who reads your name in an answer may not visit until they are ready to pay, and a buyer who never reads your name never visits at all.

If you only measure rank and traffic, AI visibility work looks like it does nothing. If you measure share of answer, you can see it move week to week.

Defining it precisely

Three components make the metric useful instead of vague:

A fixed question set. A few hundred questions your buyers actually ask, from "what is [category]" through "best [category] for [buyer type]" to "[your brand] vs [competitor]." Fixed, so changes reflect the engines and your work, not a shifting sample.

Two levels of presence. Named means the brand appears in the answer text. Cited means a page of yours is linked as a source. They are different wins; being named without being cited means the engine knows you from elsewhere, being cited without being named means you supplied a fact but not the recommendation.

Per-engine reporting. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Copilot behave differently. A single blended number hides the engine where you are losing.

Share of answer for one engine is then: questions where you are named or cited, divided by total questions. Track named and cited separately underneath.

The companion numbers

Share of answer tells you how often. Three companions tell you why:

  • Competitor share, on the same questions, so you know who has the spot when you do not.
  • Source log: every domain the engines cited across the question set, ranked by frequency. This is the single most actionable artifact in AI visibility, because it tells you exactly where to be.
  • Accuracy flags: answers that name you but state something wrong, such as old pricing or a discontinued feature. These are often fastest to fix and most damaging to leave.

Reading the numbers

A low share with a short, concentrated source log is good news: a few targeted actions can move it. A low share with a long, diffuse log means the category is noisy and the work is slower. A high named share with low cited share means your own pages are weak even though your reputation is fine, which is an on-page fix. The reverse means your pages are quoted for facts but no one recommends you, which is an off-page problem.

Running the loop

AEO GEO Labs runs this as a weekly cycle: the same question set through every engine, share of answer per engine, the source log refreshed, and a short list of what was shipped that week next to what moved. The point of the pairing is honesty. If a comparison page went live in week three and ChatGPT started citing it in week five, you can see that. If a schema pass changed nothing, you can see that too, and stop doing it.

Measure it once yourself

Write down twenty buyer questions. Ask three engines each one. Count how many answers name you, how many cite you, and list every source cited. That is a share of answer baseline, small but real. For the full version, hundreds of questions across every engine with the source log and weekly tracking, AEO GEO Labs will run it live on a 20-minute call.
