Ads in AI Answers: What Is Live, What Is Coming, and What It Changes

by 3 min read

Short answerads in ai answers

Every answer engine that has reached meaningful scale has started looking for a way to charge for attention inside the answer. This is not surprising. Search monetized the results page, and AI answers are the new results page. What matters for a brand is understanding which placements exist, how they are labeled, and what they do and do not affect.

What has shipped

Google has run ads in and around AI Overviews and in AI Mode for a while, drawn from the same auction as regular search ads and labeled as sponsored. They tend to appear below or beside the generated answer, not inside its sentences.

Microsoft has shown ads inside Copilot answers, again labeled, and has experimented with formats that look more like a cited source than a banner.

Perplexity has run sponsored follow-up questions and sponsored answers for selected advertisers. The sponsored content is marked, and the company has said advertisers do not influence the organic answer.

OpenAI has shipped ads in ChatGPT for some users and markets, with the sponsored unit kept visually separate from the model's response. What you see depends on region, plan, and test group.

The common thread: every major engine has kept paid placement separated from the generated answer and labeled it. None currently sells inclusion in the answer itself.

What has been signaled

The public statements and job postings suggest three directions.

First, more formats inside chat: sponsored suggestions, sponsored product cards, and sponsored sources alongside organic citations. Second, shopping-specific placements where a merchant pays to appear when an agent is comparing products. Third, affiliate-style arrangements where the engine earns a commission on a purchase it helped complete.

None of this is guaranteed, and the engines have reversed course on formats before. Treat it as a direction, not a roadmap.

What ads do not change

A sponsored unit beside an answer does not change what the answer says. If a user asks "which project management tool is best for a ten-person agency" and the model names three tools, those three are chosen by the model from what it retrieved and what it knows. The ad below is a separate thing, labeled as such, and in our experience users treat it the way they treat search ads: noticed, sometimes clicked, rarely trusted as much as the organic result.

This is the central point. Paid placement gets you adjacent to the answer. Only visibility work gets you into it. The answer is where the recommendation lives, and the recommendation is what moves a buyer.

What ads do change

They change the economics of the page. More paid units means less room for organic citations in the visible area, which raises the value of being in the first two or three sources rather than the eighth. They also change user expectations: as users learn that some units are paid, they tend to look harder at which ones are not, which rewards brands that show up organically.

They also create a second lane for measurement. If you run paid placements, you will want to know whether your organic presence is growing alongside or being cannibalized. Share of answer tracked separately from paid impressions shows that.

How we think about it

At AEO GEO Labs we do not buy placements and we do not plant reviews. The work is to earn citations: write pages that can be quoted, fix the technical layer so engines can read them, keep entity facts consistent everywhere, and get into the independent sources the engines already trust, from Reddit threads to G2 profiles to YouTube reviews to the lists that rank your category. When paid formats expand, that work does not become less valuable. It becomes the thing that separates you from the brands that only show up when they pay.

If you do decide to test paid units in an engine, run them the way you would run a search ad test: a clear hypothesis, a budget cap, a control period, and organic share of answer measured in parallel so you can see the net effect.

What to do now

Record how each engine currently presents sponsored content for your top five queries. Screenshots are enough. Repeat monthly. You will see the formats shift, and you will know when a change affects the space your organic citations occupy.

Then put the effort where the recommendation is made. AEO GEO Labs measures where you stand in the answer itself and reports weekly on what moved, which is the number that matters whether or not you ever buy an ad.
