How-toAnswer engine optimization

The AEO Checklist: Structuring Pages to Win Direct Answers

by 6 min read

Short answeranswer engine optimization checklist

This answer engine optimization checklist is 20 page-level checks that make content easy for featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and AI engines to lift as a direct answer. It covers four areas: answer structure, writing, markup and crawler access. Run it on one page at a time, fix the failures in order, and expect about 20 minutes per page once you know the checks.

tl;dr

  1. 1Put a 40 to 70 word direct answer right under the heading it answers.
  2. 2Make every heading a question or a clear topic, and answer it in the first sentence below.
  3. 3Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons, because both are easy to extract.
  4. 4Make sure crawlers can fetch the page and read the content without JavaScript.

If you are new to the discipline, read what answer engine optimization is first. This checklist turns that guide into page-level work.

Answer structure checks

Answer structure checks confirm that a page states its answers where engines look for them. These five matter most, so start here.

  1. The page answers one main question. You can write that question in one line. If you can't, the page is trying to do too much.
  2. A direct answer block sits near the top. Within the first 100 words there's a 40 to 70 word paragraph that fully answers the main question and makes sense quoted alone.
  3. The main keyword is in the first sentence. The opening sentence names the topic and gives the answer, not background.
  4. Every H2 and H3 is answered in its first sentence. Supporting detail comes after. A reader who reads only the first sentence under each heading still gets the full picture.
  5. Headings match how people ask. Use the phrasing buyers use ("How long does X take?") rather than clever labels ("The waiting game").

Writing checks for the direct answer format

Writing checks make sentences quotable on their own, which is the core of the direct answer format. AI engines and snippets lift sentences, not paragraphs.

  1. Definitions are complete sentences that include the term. "Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of..." beats "It's basically about...".
  2. No sentence depends on the one before. Avoid "as mentioned above", "this", and "it" at the start of a key sentence. Name the subject.
  3. Specific facts beat adjectives. Numbers, dates, named sources and concrete examples give engines something to quote. The original GEO paper found that adding statistics, quotations and citations were among the most effective ways to raise visibility in generative engine responses.
  4. Claims about changing things are dated. "As of October 2026, ..." keeps a statement true after the facts move.
  5. Sentences are short. Aim for grade 8 to 9 reading level. Long sentences are harder to extract cleanly.

Formatting and markup checks

Formatting and markup checks make the structure of your answers machine-readable.

  1. Steps are numbered lists. Each item is a full clause that makes sense alone.
  2. Comparisons are tables. Any "X vs Y" content goes in a table with clear column headers.
  3. Heading levels are logical. One H1, H2s for sections, H3s under them, no skipped levels. The Heading Structure Checker shows the outline any page actually has.
  4. A question-and-answer section covers related questions. Four to six real follow-up questions, each answered in 40 to 80 words that stand alone.
  5. Structured data describes the page. At minimum Article (or the right page type) and Organization. FAQPage remains a valid schema.org type, but Google's documentation updates record that FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search in May 2026. Add it for clarity, not for a rich result. Which types matter for AI engines is covered in schema for AI search.

Crawler access checks

Crawler access checks make sure answer engines can fetch and read the page at all. A perfect answer that can't be crawled doesn't exist to an engine.

  1. The page is indexable. No stray noindex, the canonical points to itself, and it's in your sitemap.
  2. Snippet controls aren't blocking you. Google's featured snippet documentation explains that nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet limit or prevent snippet use. Check none are set by accident.
  3. AI search crawlers are allowed. robots.txt and firewall rules allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot at minimum.
  4. Content is in the raw HTML. Many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. View source and confirm the answer text is there.

Trust checks

Trust checks give engines a reason to pick your answer over a similar one.

  1. The page shows who wrote it, when, and why they know. A byline, a published or updated date, sources linked inline, and an About page that explains who you are. Google's guidance on helpful content frames these as signals of trust.

Once all 20 pass, run the Answer-Ready Content Checker to score the page section by section. For the wider site-level work, including entity signals and off-site mentions, use the GEO checklist. How to run this answer engine optimization checklist across a site

Run the checklist on the pages most likely to answer buyer questions first, not across the whole site at once.

  1. Pick 10 pages. Your top organic pages by impressions plus your most important product, pricing and comparison pages.
  2. Score each check pass or fail. Keep it binary.
  3. Fix structure before markup. Checks 1 to 5 move results more than schema does.
  4. Fix access issues site-wide. Checks 16 to 19 are usually template or server settings, so one fix covers many pages.
  5. Recheck after recrawl. Give Google and other crawlers a few weeks, then see whether the pages appear in snippets or AI answers for their target questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is an answer engine optimization checklist?

An answer engine optimization checklist is a list of page-level checks that make content easy for answer engines, such as Google featured snippets, People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, to extract and quote. It covers where the direct answer sits, how sentences are written, how lists, tables and headings are formatted, structured data, and whether crawlers can access the page.

What are AEO best practices?

AEO best practices are to answer the main question in the first 40 to 70 words, open every section with a sentence that answers its heading, write definitions as complete sentences, use numbered lists for steps and tables for comparisons, cite specific sources, date claims that change, and make sure search and AI crawlers can fetch the page as plain HTML.

What is the direct answer format?

The direct answer format is a short paragraph, usually 40 to 70 words, placed immediately under a heading, that fully answers the heading's question in its first sentence and makes sense when quoted alone. It names the subject rather than using pronouns and avoids depending on earlier text. It's the format featured snippets and AI engines most easily lift.

Does FAQ schema still help AEO?

FAQ schema still helps engines understand that a page contains questions and answers, and FAQPage remains a valid schema.org type. But according to Google's documentation updates, FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search in May 2026, so the markup no longer earns a visible enhancement there. Write a strong on-page FAQ section first; treat the schema as a supporting signal.

How long does AEO take to show results?

AEO changes to existing pages can show results within a few weeks for pages that already rank on page one, once they're recrawled, because featured snippets and AI answers often draw from top-ranking pages. Pages that don't rank yet need the usual SEO work first. Track the target questions monthly and expect results to vary between engines.
