Schema for AI Search: Which Structured Data Helps AI Engines

by 6 min read

Short answerschema markup for ai search

Schema markup for AI search helps most when it pins down facts: who your company is, who wrote a page, what a product costs. As of October 2026, Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, while Microsoft says schema helps AI systems understand content. Organization, Person, Article and Product markup are worth having; FAQ markup chasing AI citations is not.

This builds on our complete schema markup guide, which covers the basics of types, formats and syntax. Here the question is narrower: what do AI engines actually do with structured data, and which types are worth your time?

What AI engines say about structured data

The two engines that have spoken publicly give different emphasis, but neither calls schema a requirement. Here is what each has said, as of October 2026:

Engine What it has said Source
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add." Still recommended for rich results. Google's generative AI search guide, updated July 2026
Microsoft Copilot and Bing "Schema is a type of code that helps search engines and AI systems understand your content." Microsoft's October 2025 post on AI search answers
ChatGPT No public statement on how structured data is used None found
Perplexity No public statement on how structured data is used None found

So the honest summary: no AI engine has published evidence that adding schema gets you cited. What schema can do is make your facts unambiguous for systems that do read it, including the search indexes many AI answers are grounded in.

Why raw HTML matters more than the schema type

The biggest schema problem for AI search is not which types you choose but whether crawlers can see them at all. Vercel's December 2024 analysis of AI crawler traffic found that none of the major AI crawlers, including OpenAI's, Anthropic's and Perplexity's, rendered JavaScript. JSON-LD injected by a tag manager or client-side script is invisible to them.

Google renders JavaScript, so its Rich Results Test can pass a page that AI crawlers see as unmarked. Put structured data in the server-rendered HTML. That one change matters more than any type on this list.

Organization schema for AI: the identity layer

Organization schema helps AI engines because it states your brand's core facts in one consistent place. Google's Organization markup documentation says it can "help Google better understand your organization's administrative details and disambiguate your organization in search results," and recommends placing it on your homepage or about page.

The property doing the most work is sameAs: a list of URLs for the same entity elsewhere, such as LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata or Wikipedia. It ties your site to the profiles that models have also read. If your name is shared with another company, this is how machines tell you apart. More on that in our entity SEO guide.

Fill these Organization properties with real data:

  • name, legalName and alternateName if you trade under more than one name.
  • url and logo.
  • description: one plain sentence on what you do. Keep it identical to how you describe yourself elsewhere.
  • sameAs: every official profile.
  • foundingDate, founder, address and contactPoint where accurate.

You can check whether Wikidata and Wikipedia know your brand, and get Organization markup with sameAs filled in, with the brand entity checker.

Person and Article schema: authorship

Person and Article schema help AI engines attribute content to a real, checkable author. Google's Article documentation recommends giving author a type and a url or sameAs pointing to a page that uniquely identifies the author, and suggests ProfilePage markup on internal bio pages.

For AI search, the value is consistency. An author whose bio page, LinkedIn profile and bylines all agree is easier for any system to treat as a real expert than an anonymous "Admin." Add datePublished and dateModified too. For questions where freshness matters, a machine-readable date is the cleanest way to show yours.

Product schema: facts AI answers repeat

Product schema helps AI search because product answers are full of specifics: price, availability, ratings, specs. Product with Offer markup states price, priceCurrency and availability in a form no model has to guess at. Keep it in sync with the visible page. Stale prices in markup are worse than none, because they are exactly the kind of fact an AI answer might repeat.

FAQ schema and AI Overviews

FAQ schema does not get you into AI Overviews. Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in August 2023, and its AI guidance says no special markup is needed for AI features. There's no public evidence that FAQPage markup raises citation rates in any engine.

What does help is the visible content FAQ markup describes: clear questions as headings, each followed by a direct, self-contained answer. AI engines extract sentences from pages. Write the answer well and the markup becomes a minor extra. Existing FAQPage markup does no harm, so there's no need to remove it.

Schema markup for AI search: what to implement first

If you are prioritizing schema markup for AI search, this is the order we'd use, highest value first:

Priority Type Why
1 Server-rendered JSON-LD (any) Invisible markup helps no one
2 Organization with sameAs Pins down your brand identity
3 Article with Person author Attribution and freshness
4 Product with Offer Prices and specs AI answers repeat
5 BreadcrumbList Shows site structure
6 FAQPage Optional; the visible Q&A matters more

Generate any of these with the schema markup generator, then confirm the markup is in the raw HTML using a schema markup validator.

Frequently asked questions

It can help AI systems understand your content, but it won't get you cited on its own. As of October 2026, Google says structured data isn't required for its generative AI features, while Microsoft says schema helps AI systems understand content. No engine has published evidence that schema raises citation rates. Treat it as a clarity layer on top of good, crawlable content.

Does FAQ schema help with AI Overviews?

There is no public evidence that it does. Google's AI guidance says no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and FAQ rich results have been limited to well-known government and health sites since August 2023. The visible questions and direct answers on your page matter more than the markup that describes them.

Which schema types matter most for AI engines?

Organization, Person, Article and Product matter most, because they state facts AI answers depend on: who you are, who wrote a page, when it was updated, and what a product costs. Organization with sameAs links is the highest priority for brands, since it connects your site to profiles like LinkedIn and Wikidata that models also read.

Can ChatGPT and Perplexity read JSON-LD?

Only if it is in the HTML their crawlers fetch. As of October 2026, neither OpenAI nor Perplexity has said how they use structured data. Vercel's 2024 analysis found that major AI crawlers do not render JavaScript, so markup added by scripts after page load is invisible to them. Server-render your JSON-LD so every crawler can read it.

Is structured data a ranking factor for LLMs?

No public evidence says so. Large language models don't have a published ranking system, and no AI company has listed structured data as a citation signal. Structured data may help retrieval systems parse facts accurately. Our view is that it is worth doing for clarity and Google rich results, not as a lever for AI rankings.

If you want this done for your site, AEO GEO Labs implements structured data that AI crawlers can actually read, as part of its GEO, AEO and SEO programs for B2B and SaaS teams. See our services.
