Schema Markup for AI Search: The Three Types That Matter

by 3 min read

Short answerschema markup for ai search

Schema markup is structured data embedded in your pages that states, in a machine-readable format, what a page is about: this is an organization, this is a product with this price, these are questions and answers. For AI search it does a specific job. It lets an engine confirm facts about you without inferring them from prose, which makes it more willing to state those facts in an answer.

Why engines care

A model reading your pricing page has to decide whether "$49" is the monthly price, the annual price per seat, or a crossed-out old price. Prose is ambiguous. A Product schema block with price, priceCurrency, and billingIncrement is not. The same applies to who you are: an Organization block with name, foundingDate, address, and sameAs links to your profiles elsewhere gives an engine a verified identity to attach every other fact to.

That is the real value for AI visibility: disambiguation and confidence. Schema does not make a model recommend you. It makes the model sure it is talking about you, and sure of the facts it states.

The three types to prioritize

Organization. One block, usually on the homepage, with name, legal name if different, URL, logo, founding date, address, contact point, and sameAs pointing to your Wikidata entry, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, and any other profile you control. The sameAs list is the most underused field on the web. It is how you tell every engine that the G2 listing and the Wikidata item and your site are the same entity.

Product (or SoftwareApplication for software). Name, description, offers with price and currency, and for software, applicationCategory and operatingSystem. If you have tiers, mark each as a separate Offer. Keep it synchronized with the visible pricing; a mismatch is worse than no schema.

FAQPage. For pages with real question-and-answer sections. Each question and its answer, exactly as shown on the page. This is the type most directly tied to being quoted, because it hands an engine the question-shaped passages it is looking for.

Types that usually are not worth it

Rich, nested schema for every blog post, BreadcrumbList on every page, and speculative types for things your page does not visibly contain. Engines cross-check schema against page content. Marking up what is not there is ignored at best and treated as a trust signal against you at worst.

The mistakes that make schema useless

  • Schema that disagrees with the page. Old price in the block, new price on screen.
  • Schema that disagrees with the web. Founding date in your Organization block that differs from Crunchbase and Wikidata.
  • No sameAs. The single easiest fix with the largest consistency payoff.
  • Injected by JavaScript after load. Some crawlers never execute it. Put JSON-LD in the initial HTML.
  • Invalid JSON. One trailing comma and the whole block is discarded silently. Validate every deploy.

A minimal Organization example

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Ledgerly",
  "url": "https://ledgerly.com",
  "foundingDate": "2019",
  "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Austin", "addressRegion": "TX", "addressCountry": "US" },
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q000000",
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/ledgerly",
    "https://www.g2.com/products/ledgerly"
  ]
}

How this fits the bigger picture

AEO GEO Labs ships schema as part of a consistency pass rather than as a standalone task: the Organization block, the Product or SoftwareApplication blocks, an FAQPage block on each page with genuine FAQs, an llms.txt drawn from the same facts, and then a sweep of every third-party profile so the sameAs targets actually agree with the schema. The weekly report tracks whether engines start quoting the facts correctly, which is the only outcome that matters.

Do this first

Validate what you have. Then add sameAs to your Organization block, because it is the smallest change with the largest effect on how confidently engines identify you. If you want a generated, validated starting point, AEO GEO Labs has a free schema markup generator among its tools.
