Why Reddit Shows Up in So Many AI Answers (and What to Do About It)
by the AEO GEO Labs team3 min read
Ask an AI engine for the best tool in almost any category and look at the citations. A Reddit thread is often there, sometimes above the review sites, sometimes above the vendors. For many B2B and consumer categories, community threads are among the most-cited sources an engine uses. Understanding why tells you how to be part of it.
Why engines lean on community threads
They answer the actual question. A thread titled "What payroll software do you use for a 30-person startup?" with twenty replies is the closest thing on the web to a focus group. The engine does not have to infer the buyer's intent; the thread states it.
They are independent. Vendors describe themselves. Review platforms have commercial relationships. A thread of practitioners comparing notes reads as unmotivated, and engines appear to weight that.
They are specific. Replies name products, state what worked and what broke, and mention prices and team sizes. That is lift-ready material.
They are abundant and current. New threads appear daily, so for recency-sensitive questions there is almost always a fresh one.
The result is that a single well-regarded thread can be cited across hundreds of question variations, which is leverage no landing page offers.
What not to do
Everything the community has already seen: new accounts that only post about one product, replies that read like ad copy, upvote rings, and founders answering "what do you recommend?" with their own tool and no disclosure. Moderators remove it, users flag it, and the thread you wanted to be in becomes a thread about your astroturfing. Engines also read the removal and the flagging.
What works
Be a real participant. Someone on your team with genuine category expertise, posting under their name, answering questions fully, including ones that have nothing to do with buying your product. Disclose affiliation every time it is relevant. Over months, that account's replies become citable.
Answer the comparison question honestly. When someone asks "A vs B vs C," the reply that earns citations says where each is strong, including where yours is not. A model quotes balanced answers; it skips pitches.
Supply the fact nobody else has. Current pricing, a limit, an integration detail, a migration gotcha. Precise information from a disclosed vendor employee is often welcomed exactly because it is precise.
Monitor the threads that already cite your category. When an engine is citing a two-year-old thread with outdated information about you, a polite, disclosed, factual correction in that thread is one of the highest-return actions in AI visibility.
Beyond Reddit
The same logic applies to Hacker News, Stack Overflow, industry Slack and Discord communities whose archives are public, Quora, and category-specific forums. Log which communities the engines actually cite for your questions and focus there. In most categories it is two or three, not twenty.
How we handle it
AEO GEO Labs keeps a 30-day log of every source cited for a client's buyer questions, and community threads almost always appear near the top. We then do the unglamorous version of community work: identifying the threads engines already cite, drafting honest, disclosed replies for the client's own expert to review and post, and tracking whether share of answer moves on the questions those threads serve. No bought accounts, no fake reviews, and we mean it.
Start here
Search your category on Reddit. Find the three threads that come up most, read them end to end, and notice which replies an engine would quote. If none of them mention you, or they mention you wrongly, you have found your first task. To see which communities every engine actually cites for your category, AEO GEO Labs will pull the source log live.
