G2, Capterra, and the Review Sites AI Engines Trust

by 3 min read

Short answerg2, capterra, and the review sites ai engines trust

Ask any AI engine for the best software in a B2B category and watch the citations. Review platforms appear in a large share of them: G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, GetApp, and the category-specific sites. For "best" and "top" questions, an engine often trusts the aggregated verdict of a review platform over any vendor's own page. Your profile there is, in effect, a page the engines read about you that you only partly control.

Why engines lean on review platforms

They are independent of the vendor. They aggregate many opinions into a score and a ranking, which is exactly the shape of answer a "best" question wants. They are structured, with consistent fields for pricing, features, and segments, which makes them easy to parse. And they are maintained: profiles update, reviews accumulate, rankings refresh.

An engine composing "the best payroll tools for startups" can lift a category ranking from a review site in one pass, with a defensible source attached. That is hard to compete with on your own site and easy to join.

What a strong profile contains

Claimed and current. An unclaimed or stale profile is the most common finding in audits. Claim it, update plan names, pricing, integrations, and the one-sentence description, and align all of it with your canonical fact sheet.

Accurate segment data. Company size, industries, and use cases. Engines use these to match "for a 40-person startup" questions to products.

A steady flow of genuine reviews. Not a burst, not incentivized in ways the platform forbids, not scripted. Ask real customers at natural moments, such as after a successful onboarding or a renewal, and make it easy. Engines appear to weigh recency and volume together; a profile with 40 reviews, ten of them this year, outperforms one with 200 that stopped in 2023.

Responses to reviews. Thoughtful vendor replies, especially to critical reviews, read as a healthy company and are sometimes quoted.

Screenshots and media. They matter less to engines than to buyers, but buyers arrive from engines, and the profile is the landing page.

The category and comparison pages

Beyond your own profile, review platforms publish category pages ("Payroll Software"), comparison pages ("A vs B"), and "best of" lists that engines cite directly. Where you appear on those depends on reviews, profile completeness, and the platform's own ranking logic. You cannot buy your way up, and attempts to game it are detected and penalized by the platforms themselves.

What not to do

Purchased reviews, review swaps, internal staff reviews, and incentives that violate platform rules. These risk removal from the platform entirely, which removes you from a source engines cite for your whole category, a loss far larger than any temporary bump.

Which platforms matter for you

Not all of them. Log which review sites engines actually cite for your category over a month. In most categories it is two or three. Focus there first; a complete, active profile on the one site engines read beats mediocre profiles on ten.

How we approach it

AEO GEO Labs identifies the review platforms engines cite for a client's category from the source log, claims and aligns each profile with the canonical fact sheet, sets up an honest review-request flow tied to real customer milestones, and then tracks whether share of answer moves on the "best" questions those platforms serve. No paid placements, no fake reviews.

This week

Open your profile on the review site engines cite most for your category. Check the pricing, the plan names, and the description against your site. Fix what differs. Then ask three happy customers for a review. For the list of which platforms engines are actually reading for your category, AEO GEO Labs will pull it live.
