Best Generative Engine Optimization Tools (Honest Comparison)
by the AEO GEO Labs team6 min read
The best generative engine optimization tools depend on the job. For tracking AI mentions and citations, the main options are Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar and SE Ranking. For free first-party data, use Google Search Console's Generative AI report and Bing's AI Performance report. For technical checks, a crawler plus robots.txt and rendering tests cover most needs.
This comparison groups tools by what they do rather than ranking them, and contains no affiliate links. For the strategy these tools serve, start with our generative engine optimization guide. All product details below were checked on vendor sites in October 2026; features change often.

Tracking tools: who mentions you, and where
Tracking tools run a set of prompts through AI engines on a schedule and record whether your brand is mentioned, cited and how it is described.
Profound is built for enterprises. As of October 2026 its site describes answer engine insights, prompt volume data, agent analytics and an "AI Marketer" agent that drafts work for approval, with enterprise features such as role-based access, SCIM and SOC 2 compliance.
Peec AI focuses on three metrics it names visibility, position and sentiment, with prompt tagging, competitor benchmarking, and export to CSV, Looker Studio or its API.
Otterly.AI lists one of the widest sets of engines among the tools we checked, and adds prompt research and optimization features alongside monitoring.
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit adds AI visibility scores, competitor research, prompt research, daily prompt tracking and a crawler-blocking audit to Semrush. As of October 2026, Semrush's knowledge base lists it as a separate subscription at $99 per month, or bundled in Semrush One plans.
Ahrefs Brand Radar stands out for scale: Ahrefs says it models over 449 million prompts from its keyword data, and adds custom prompt tracking, AI traffic and bot analytics, and off-site tracking on YouTube, TikTok and Reddit. It is sold as an add-on to Ahrefs plans.
SE Ranking's AI Visibility Tracker reports brand mentions and linked mentions per engine, and offers a few free checks per day on its site.
Our view: the tracking tools are more alike than their marketing suggests. Choose on engine coverage, prompt limits, data export and price, then stick with one, because switching resets your history.
How to choose a tracking tool
Choose a tracking tool by working backwards from the decisions it should inform:
- List the engines your buyers actually use, and drop tools that miss them.
- Count the prompts you need: 50 to 150 for most single-market B2B brands.
- Check whether the tool runs each prompt more than once, since answers vary.
- Confirm you can export raw answers, not just scores.
- Prefer the suite you already pay for if its coverage is good enough.

Free first-party data: Google and Bing
The free reports from Google and Bing are the only GEO data that comes from the engines themselves. Every team should turn them on before paying for anything.
As of October 2026, Google Search Console has a Generative AI performance report showing impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Google announced the reports in June 2026 and rolled them out to all sites on 31 August 2026.
Bing Webmaster Tools offers AI Performance, launched in public preview in February 2026, showing total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries and page-level citation counts across Microsoft Copilot and AI summaries in Bing.
Neither covers ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude, which is why third-party tracking exists.
Prompt research tools: what people ask AI
Prompt research tools estimate which questions people put to AI engines, the GEO equivalent of keyword research. As of October 2026, Profound (Prompt Volumes), Semrush (Prompt Research), Otterly.AI (Prompt Research) and Ahrefs Brand Radar all offer a version.
Treat these numbers as modeled estimates: no AI engine publishes prompt volume, so vendors infer it. Use them to rank topics, not to forecast traffic.
Technical tools: can AI crawlers read you?
Technical GEO tools check whether AI crawlers can reach and read your pages. You need three checks: robots.txt access for agents like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, rendered content without JavaScript, and valid structured data.
- A site crawler. The Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs free; as of October 2026 its site lists a paid licence at £199 per year.
- AI crawler access. Our free AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt and shows which AI agents are allowed.
- Rendering. What AI Sees compares raw HTML with the rendered page, so you can spot content AI crawlers may miss.
- Structured data. Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best generative engine optimization tools?
The best generative engine optimization tools depend on the job. For tracking AI mentions, the main options are Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar and SE Ranking. For free first-party data, use Google Search Console's Generative AI report and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report. For technical checks, use a crawler plus robots.txt and rendering tests.
Are there free GEO tools?
Yes. As of October 2026, Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report are free and come from the engines themselves. Several vendors offer free trials or limited free checks. Manual prompt testing in a spreadsheet is free too, and works well for up to about 50 prompts tracked monthly.
Do I need a paid AI visibility tracker?
Not at first. A spreadsheet, a fixed list of buyer questions and a monthly manual run across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity give you a usable baseline. A paid tracker becomes worth it when you track more than about 50 prompts, need daily data, cover several engines or markets, or report to stakeholders regularly.
Which GEO tool covers the most AI engines?
As of October 2026, Profound, Otterly.AI and Ahrefs Brand Radar list the widest coverage among the tools we checked, each naming seven engines, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Coverage changes often, so confirm on the vendor's site that the engines your buyers use are included before signing up.
