Gemini and Google AI Mode: Optimizing for Google's AI Answers

by 5 min read

Short answerai mode seo

AI Mode SEO is the work of getting your pages cited inside Google AI Mode, the conversational search tab powered by Gemini. Google says AI Mode draws on its normal Search index and ranking systems, so the rules are SEO rules: be indexed and snippet-eligible, rank for the many sub-questions AI Mode searches behind the scenes, and write passages that answer each one cleanly.

This guide is part of our LLM SEO guide. It covers Google AI Mode and the Gemini app; for the summary box at the top of results, see how to rank in Google AI Overviews.

What Google AI Mode is, and how it relates to Gemini

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search for complex, multi-step questions. As of Google's I/O 2026 Search announcement in May 2026, AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, and Gemini 3.5 Flash became its default model globally. Google also lets people ask a follow-up from an AI Overview and continue the conversation in AI Mode.

There are three related surfaces, and it helps to keep them apart:

Surface Where it lives Source of web results
AI Overviews Top of a normal Google results page Google Search index
AI Mode A separate tab in Google Search Google Search index, with query fan-out
Gemini app gemini.google.com and mobile apps Google Search grounding (see below)

For the Gemini app, Google hasn't published a sourcing guide for site owners. Its developer docs for Grounding with Google Search show how Gemini models do it in the API: the model decides whether a search would help, generates one or more Google Search queries, and returns an answer with inline URL citations. Our inference, labeled as such: if you are visible in Google Search for the right sub-questions, you are in the pool the Gemini app can draw from.

How AI Mode chooses sources

AI Mode chooses sources by running many related searches at once and citing the pages that best answer each part. Google calls this query fan-out. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features, updated July 2026, describes fan-out as "a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model" and says these features rely on core Search ranking to retrieve pages from the Search index.

Two practical consequences:

  • The query you target is not the only query that matters. AI Mode may cite you for a sub-question even if you don't rank for the original prompt.
  • Long conversations open more doors. Each follow-up a user asks triggers new searches, and each one is a fresh chance to be retrieved.

AI Mode SEO, step by step

These steps follow Google's published guidance, ordered from eligibility to differentiation.

  1. Check eligibility. Google's AI features documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. There are "no additional requirements" and no special markup.
  2. Check the Search Console setting. As of July 2026, Google's guide says a site must be included in the "Search generative AI features" setting in Search Console. Inclusion is the default.
  3. Map the fan-out. For each topic, list the sub-questions a careful buyer asks: cost, setup time, alternatives, risks, comparisons. Our Question Finder helps build the list.
  4. Answer each sub-question under its own heading. Lead with a direct 40 to 60 word answer, then the detail.
  5. Bring non-commodity content. Google's guide singles out first-hand experience and unique viewpoints, and warns that recycled summaries add little.
  6. Complete your Business Profile and Merchant Center data if you're a local business or sell products. Google says AI responses can include product listings and local business details from these sources.
  7. Add images and video where they help. Google's guide notes its AI features can show relevant images and video, which gives you more ways to appear.

A warning from Google itself: creating separate pages for every fan-out variation, mainly to manipulate AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy. Cover sub-questions where they genuinely help readers, not by mass-producing thin pages.

What not to do for AI Mode

Google's July 2026 guide lists tactics you can ignore for its AI features. As of October 2026, it says:

  • You don't need llms.txt or other AI text files, because Google Search doesn't use them.
  • You don't need to "chunk" content into tiny pieces.
  • You don't need to rewrite for AI or chase every long-tail variant, because its systems understand synonyms.
  • Structured data isn't required for AI features, though it still helps with rich results.

Our view: this list is a useful filter for vendor pitches. If someone sells "AI Mode optimization" built mainly on these items, ask what else is in the scope.

How to measure AI Mode visibility

Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report is the main first-party source. As of October 2026, it shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode together, by page, country, device and date. It doesn't show queries, and it doesn't separate AI Mode from AI Overviews.

To see which questions you're cited for, run a fixed list of prompts in AI Mode monthly and log whether your site appears and who appears instead. Background on the wider feature set is in our explainer on what Google AI Overviews are.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode SEO different from regular SEO?

Mostly no, by Google's own account. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." The difference is emphasis: AI Mode runs many sub-queries, so covering the follow-up questions around a topic matters more than ranking for one head term.

Does Gemini use Google Search to answer questions?

Gemini models can ground answers in Google Search. Google's developer documentation shows the model generating one or more search queries, then answering with inline URL citations. Google hasn't published a separate sourcing guide for the consumer Gemini app, so being visible in Google Search is the safest working assumption for showing up in Gemini answers.

Can I see AI Mode traffic separately in Search Console?

Not as of October 2026. The Generative AI performance report combines AI Mode and AI Overviews and reports impressions by page, country, device and date, without queries. To isolate AI Mode, track a fixed set of prompts manually or with a third-party tool that lists AI Mode as a separate surface.

Can I keep my content out of AI Mode?

Yes. You can exclude your site using the Search generative AI features setting in Search Console, or limit what Google shows with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet. Google says exclusion stops your content appearing and being linked in these features, but it may still be used for other parts of Search.
