Brand Mentions vs Backlinks: What Moves AI Visibility
by the AEO GEO Labs team6 min read
In the brand mentions vs backlinks debate, the current evidence favors mentions for AI visibility: Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated far more strongly with appearing in Google AI Overviews than backlink counts did. Backlinks still matter for rankings, and rankings feed AI answers. The practical answer is to earn both, but measure mentions.
tl;dr
- 1A backlink is a hyperlink to your site. A brand mention is your name appearing in text, linked or not.
- 2Language models learn and retrieve from text, so how often and where your name appears shapes whether they recommend you.
- 3Backlinks still drive rankings, and many AI answers are built from top-ranking pages.
This post sits under our guide to AI visibility, which defines how brands show up in AI answers and how to measure it.
Brand mentions vs backlinks: the definitions
A backlink is a hyperlink from another website to yours. A brand mention is any appearance of your brand name on another website, whether or not it links to you. An unlinked brand mention is the second kind without the first.
| Backlink | Brand mention | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A clickable link to your URL | Your name in text, linked or not |
| How search engines read it | A vote for a specific page; anchor text adds context | Context about your brand: what it is, what it is known for |
| How LLMs read it | Mostly as text; the link itself carries little meaning in training data | As text that associates your brand with topics and other entities |
| Main value | Rankings, referral traffic, crawl discovery | Entity recognition, AI recommendations, reputation |
| Easy to fake? | Paid links violate Google's spam policies but still exist | Hard to fake at scale on sources that matter |
Citations are a third, related idea. In AI search, a citation is a link an answer engine shows as the source of its answer. Mentions and backlinks are what you earn on other sites. Citations are what you earn inside AI answers.
What the data says about AI visibility
The strongest public data on this question comes from Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, published in May 2025. It measured how often each brand appeared in Google AI Overviews and compared that against several signals using Spearman correlation.
| Signal | Correlation with AI Overview brand visibility |
|---|---|
| Branded web mentions | 0.664 |
| Branded anchors | 0.527 |
| Branded search volume | 0.392 |
| Domain Rating | 0.326 |
| Referring domains | 0.295 |
| Number of backlinks | 0.218 |
Branded web mentions had the strongest relationship of anything measured. Raw backlink count had one of the weakest. The same study found that about 26% of brands had no AI Overview mentions at all.
Three cautions. First, it is correlation: big brands have lots of mentions and lots of AI visibility, and the study cannot separate cause from effect. Second, it covered Google AI Overviews, not ChatGPT or Perplexity. Third, "branded anchors" came second, which means links that use your brand name still count for a lot. The data does not say links are worthless. It says links measured by volume are a weak proxy.
Why unlinked brand mentions matter to AI engines
Unlinked brand mentions matter to AI engines because large language models work with text, not link graphs. When a model learns that a brand name appears repeatedly near "project management software for agencies" across reviews, forums and news, it builds an association. When a user later asks for project management software for agencies, that association influences what it names.
This plays out in two stages:
- Training. Models absorb patterns from large text datasets. Frequent, consistent descriptions of your brand across many independent sources make it more likely the model "knows" what you do.
- Retrieval. Answer engines such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews fetch live web pages to build answers. As of October 2026, Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out," running several related searches. A brand mentioned across many of those results has more chances to appear.
Why backlinks still matter
Backlinks still matter because rankings still matter. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews, and the pages that rank well for the fan-out queries are the ones most likely to be retrieved. Backlinks remain one of the inputs to those rankings.
Links also send referral traffic and pass authority to specific URLs, such as a comparison page you want cited.
Paid or manipulated links are still a risk. Google requires paid links to be marked with rel="sponsored" or nofollow, per its guidance on qualifying outbound links, and link schemes fall under its spam policies.
How to split your effort between mentions and links
Split your effort by goal: mentions on sources AI engines read for recommendations, links to a specific page for rankings. Usually the same work earns both.
| Activity | Earns mentions | Earns links | AI visibility value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original research or data | High | High | High: cited by journalists and AI alike |
| Digital PR and expert commentary | High | Medium | High |
| Inclusion in third-party "best X" lists and reviews | High | Medium | High: these pages are retrieved for buyer questions |
| Genuine participation in Reddit and forums | Medium | Low (usually nofollow) | Medium to high, depending on topic |
| Guest posts | Medium | Medium | Low to medium |
| Buying links | Low | High, at risk | Low, and violates Google's policies |

How to find and use unlinked brand mentions
You can find unlinked brand mentions with a web search for your brand name excluding your own domain, or with a mention-monitoring tool. Then sort what you find:
- Accurate mentions: leave them alone. They already help. Ask for a link only where it would genuinely help readers.
- Inaccurate mentions: wrong pricing, outdated product descriptions, old company names. Ask the publisher to correct them. AI engines repeat errors they read.
- Missing mentions: lists and comparisons in your category that name competitors but not you. These are your outreach targets.

Frequently asked questions
Are brand mentions more important than backlinks?
For visibility in AI answers, current evidence suggests brand mentions matter more. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with Google AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlink count. For traditional rankings, backlinks remain important. Since AI answers often draw on ranking pages, the strongest position is earning both.
Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?
Unlinked brand mentions help AI visibility because language models and answer engines read text, so your name appearing alongside relevant topics builds association. Google has not confirmed that unlinked mentions are a direct ranking factor for classic search. They do help indirectly by increasing brand searches and making it easier to earn links later.
What is the difference between a citation and a backlink?
A backlink is a hyperlink from another website to yours, earned on that site. A citation, in AI search, is a source link an answer engine such as Perplexity or Google AI Overviews shows alongside its answer. Backlinks influence whether your page ranks and gets retrieved; citations are the visible result when an AI answer uses your page.
How do I get more brand mentions?
Get more brand mentions by publishing original data journalists can quote, offering expert commentary to publications in your field, getting included in third-party reviews and comparison lists, and participating genuinely in communities where buyers ask questions. Correct inaccurate mentions too. Consistent, accurate descriptions across many independent sources are what make AI engines confident naming you.
Should I still build backlinks for AI search?
Yes, but build them through the same work that earns mentions: research, PR and reviews. Links still feed the rankings that AI engines retrieve from, and brand-name anchor text showed a strong correlation in Ahrefs' data. Avoid buying links. Paid links violate Google's spam policies, and they rarely come with the editorial mentions that matter for AI answers.
